The Heritage Rhode Island Red Site

Bob,
Thanks for the info.
Also thank you for including my Bates line on your list. It is much appreciated.
To clear up any confusion, my last name is Fogle (which is Bird in German):D
Fogelly is a nickname. I don't even remember where it came from, but I have been called it for 35+ years.

I need to post some updated pictures, the birds from last spring are looking really nice. I have selected my breeders for this coming season and turned on the lights this morning.

Looks like its going to be a good year for LF RIR.
I plan to do my part.

Some of hatch I took out of the bator this morning. RIR babies with two Marans

Sure are cute little biddies. I have a few of the BCM hens and when I hatched them out they really were nice and oh my do they grow fast. Some of the fastest growers that I've had. I don't raise any of them anymore, just sticking more with my RIR's. My BCM were the Bev Davis line and super nice as adults.

Thank you. I have been working with Marans for many years, but a coon got in and killed almost all of them. I have been working on blues ,, blacks, and splash with no copper coloration. Now I have to pretty much start over with some BCM and Blues. On the upside my RIR are doing much better., VIVI

You are going to need a air shipment from someone of some nice chicks. There is no one with a good strain in your region that I know of. Hopefully in a few years there will be one on Whidbey Island . bob

I am up for it. The beauty of being retired with liquid income is getting started and knowing I can make a difference. I have the patience, the drive, and the focus. What I lack is the experience in this particular strain of bird. I want to do it right from the get go and pass it on.

Today was the Eastern Iowa Poultry Association's 142nd show. It was a great day. I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to visit with Mr. Underwood himself. He confirmed that he is still raising Large Fowl Reds and hopes to until at least 2014, at which time the line will have been in his family for 100 years. There couldn't be a nicer man. Mr. Underwood entered 2 Large Fowl. I will post pictures of a few reds that were in the show, including Mr. Underwood's Rose Comb cockerel and my Single Comb hen (from my Rose Comb pen). My hen placed first place hen. This show excited me even more with this breed.

I got a phone call from a fellow last night from Mo. who asked me of all the strains in the USA and said he wanted to get some. I dont know if he was a relative of someone who raises chickens or Reds or what. He said he wanted to show his Reds and win. There is a difference when you get started as some strains are considered Heritage or Standard Breed but when you show them against stiff competing you better have birds with good type and color. If you dont you will place way back in the pack.

I think the next time some one calls me like this I am going to be more less stupid. I dont think they will listen to you anyway. I have my top three strains I would own to show with if I was getting started. If I just wanted some for pets and to own I can think of maybe five to ten people who could supply your needs.

Even if you are a beginner and you get five teen chicks from the top three breeders do you have the know how to breed them and maintain them. It took most of these breeders twenty years to learn how to do it. Even if they gave you their secrets you still have to pay your dues. Thought I would put that out there. I have a picture of a very nice cock bird emailed to me but I cant get it from my computer to this site. Will try latter. bob
