There are two deeps topped with an empty deep just for holding things for the day. I took the empty one off and added it to the second one today.

Both deeps are filled with all but one frame of drawn comb. The one not drawn frame makes it easier to fit the queen package in.

Starting with one deep is the way to go and add the second later. For me, it is more convenient to leave both the deeps rather than find somewhere to store the second.

What did you decide to do about the queenless hive? Are you going to give them a frame of eggs from your Italian bees? Or are you holding out for the replacement Saskatraz package?

Bob, they make gloves for handling them. If you don’t like the white ones, I think good leather could save your fingers.

The replacement package is due next week. When it arrives, I will add it to the queenless hive.

Through all of this, I got stung once and it was not intentional. A bee had its head and thorax squashed between hive bodies. I was just trying to brush the abdomen off of the hive. It obviously still had enough reaction left to implant the stinger in my finger. There is only a little swelling left in the end of the finger now.
