It’s hard to catch real fish on flies, but i can understand why a liberal like yourself wouldn’t want to hurt a real fly or worm.
I suppose it’s hard for people that lack the coordination to properly cast a fly or the overall strength to use an 8-10wt rod so they can toss big flies. Hey it’s not for everyone, some people take the easy way. 
I’ve never caught a seagull but have hooked a little brown bat by the webbing on the wing. I’ve actually seen someone else do it too. Occasionally on streams in the evening when bugs are hatching the bats are swooping down to eat. I’m not sure if they are going after the fake bug or it’s just bad luck.

Yeah I tie thousands of flies a year with buck tail. It’s usually used for saltwater flies but can be used for smaller baitfish imitations for freshwater too. You can dye them too.

I will remove the life force from any bat I see. I hate them.
