The incredible story of Gimpy, the black skinned, featherless, one legged chicken with pics!!

I guess the age & situation probably makes a difference as once a behavior is established, it becomes habit instead of hormone related. Take established marking/humping in cats & dogs for instance.
Also, other males crowing in the vicinity often set roosters off & we don't have any

It's worth a try at least & I'm

Well, your capon will probaly crow some, but not as much. And you don't have to worry about any fertilized eggs. It wil be interesting to see how he does as he ages past six months, because the only capons I have seen online were only allowed to live that long and were then butchered for meat. I know his comb will be smaller, and good luck with your endeavour.

Here's the little guy last night (it's just poop on the bandage)

And the velociraptors Imogene & Ralph:

I have very much satisfied myself about the "experts" being wrong. This little guy is showing all the signs of chicken contentment that there are. He preens, stretches both legs, sunbathes in the headlamp, eats, drinks & purrs when I stroke him as we'll as being interested in freckles, jewelry etc like a normal healthy chicken. The only thing I haven't seen him do since I got him is dust bathe & I keep him on towels so that combined with a sore & now raw leg, is ample dissuasion. It's interesting to see that his skin condition has improved. He came to me all flakey & even a bath & good food couldn't fix it but since the surgery, his skin is almost perfect. I think it's due to the lack of pain & accompanied stress the dangly bit of the leg caused. He used to cry all the time & my heart bled for him but now he really seems so much better & this is just with a shortened stump.

Glad they are doing well, and I hope Gimpy will end up a girl. So that you will have a nice little trio, and not have to caponize Gimpy later on either.

PS I was just doing more research on caponizing, and found this thread from last year. It is in the meatbird section, and the bird pictured were caponized for slaughter, but included was a picture of some nine month old caponized rooster of barred rock and buff orphington origin. The picture is under post 103. Hope this can be helpful, though I don't think the owner kept them much longer than nine months. So this might give you an idea on what to except.

I'm pretty sure I do have a trio as there is a noticeable difference between Ralph & the hens & he's a rosecomb so it shouldn't even be quite so obvious. Gimpy's comb is black like all her body & exactly the same size as Imogenes'. Gimpy is scared of me cause I have to inject her every day but I spend some time every evening with her on my chest while I read so I hope she will get over it. She's asleep right now wrapped in my UA football shirt :))
