The khaki-Campbell duck Thread !!!!!!!!

I have two Khaki females and one Blue Swedish female in my adult duck flock. Last night I put them all to bed in a clean coop. This a.m. I let them out and went in to check if they had laid their traditional egg or two and to my surprise, in the corner of the coop, they had made a nest in in the nest were six eggs. That would be two eggs each overnight. I took the eggs because I am not ready for ducklings yet plus no one seemed to be all the broody. But, while I know that a duck may on occasion lay two eggs in one day is it unusual for all three to do two each at the same time?

So, I have yet to find the elusive egg from my hen hatched on 4/12/14. I know that she should be laying, and have looked all over where she free ranges during the day. I have kept her locked up for two days in hope that she would give me a gift. Nothing. Yesterday I felt around on her lower abdomen and felt nothing. Anyone else with an April hatch still not laying? I know that it really doesn't mean anything, but her boyfriend has been doing his job with her...Can anyone get me some advice?

I got my ducks for meat and eggs, but just within the last month I had to admit that they were pets when one of our hens went missing one day, and I cried. We never really found her, but we know what probably happened to her, and the pond overflow drain now has a cap on it to prevent it from happening again.

Help! My best KC drake G.B. is so sick idk what to do! A few wks ago I noticed his balance a little bit off & then a few days later his neck took on this awkward "S" shape & his chest was sunk in. A few wks have passed & his health has went from Ok to terrible. Just 3 days ago was when he stopped eating altogether. Now this morning his wings are dragging the ground his back is missing feathers the skin looks torn & scratched, yellowish. His under eye looks white. My poor duck is all jacked up. I've separated him from the others even tho they can all c each other the other 3 ducks can't get over to him. I'm sure that the other 2 males have been mean to him in the past several months but I didn't think that their bullying was too awful bad. Over the past few wks they haven't messed with him & they even seem to know that he isn't well. Some1 tell me what I got going on here. I really don't think that the others have caused this. They didn't seem to be getting to him too bad & he held his own. He has always been such a gentle sweet drake where as the other 2 have taken on a rather wild (&mean) disposition. Everyone still seems to be tolerant of the other tho. Idk plz help me figure out what's going on & what to do with my poor sick g.b.:-( will upload pics if my cell will let me :-(

We've only had one female KC who laid eggs and she was 9 1/2 months old before her first egg! She was hatched the very beginning of May last year and laid her first egg mid-Feb of this year. We've hatched 8 of her eggs and kept 2 girls. They were hatched in mid-April and no eggs so far. I expect it'll be a while before we see any.

Let's talk winter duck care!

What do you do about water if you're in the North and it snows and it below freezing for months?? Will they be fine without a pool?  What type of waterer do you use for ducks in the winter?

Last year we did drain their pond. We have a heater that will prevent the water from freezing unless it's extremely cold, like below 0 but the pond needs to be cleaned out every 3 weeks or so, which will be virtually impossible with the hoses frozen, so we will likely leave the pond empty again this winter. During the winter we use round sleds (like for going down hills of snow) to water our birds. It's nice because they are open so the ducks can still get in and clean themselves and it's easy to flip over every night so snow/ice doesn't accumulate in it. I refill it every morning with a bucket of water from the kitchen sink. If it's below freezing during the day, I'll check it at least 2 or 3 times during the day to break the ice or melt the ice with more water. When it's REALLY cold, like -20, I'll check the water every 2 hours or so because it freezes so quickly! Last year I had a 2 person rectangular sled between the water dish and food dish so they had a place to stand out of the snow. I would flip it over every day so they had a snow free surface to stand on. Most importantly, I think, is to flip the water dish over every night so you aren't fighting ice in the morning! It makes the whole process much easier! We do not keep food or water in the coop with the ducks. We also don't heat either duck or the chicken coops and they have never had a problem! The ducks are extremely hardy and the snow and cold temps don't even seem to phase them! They don't even mind dragging their bodies through deep snow! The chickens don't come out if it's snowing and they seem slower when it's really cold (below zero). The ducks don't even seem to notice the weather!
