The khaki-Campbell duck Thread !!!!!!!!

I just went to the learning center and looked at the first page on ducks and it mentioned that the Khaki Campbell is a hybrid. First I have heard of that and I am wondering if they breed true.
Also I am wondering about the light versus dark colored KCs as far as egg production. I am reading the lighter ones may lay more eggs - can someone tell me if that is true and if so how it works. Thanks

nchvac, welcome to BYC.

Khaki Campbells are not hybrids, just another variety of duck derived from mallards. They can breed true, I gave one of my neighbors some fertilized eggs and they grew up to look just like their parents. My Khakis are the lighter ones and are great layers. I don't remember if they are better layers than the dark Khakis, I would have to look that up. I can't imagine there would be a difference.

I would encourage you to do the reading on that link that I posted before.  It might be wise to purchase some duck eggs, to see it they will agree with your wife. They are a richer egg, delicious but some people get reactions with digestion, Some use GAS X, I use Ox Bile to help my gallbladder take care of the eggs`s natural fat content.I believe when  people have digestion problems , it will show up when they eat duck eggs. Their gallbladder may need help with taking care of fats.
Ducks love to forage and are not happy caged up, they need water at all times when they have feed.Wire flooring is not good.and
housing them with chickens is not good either. Ducks are like pigs`s with feathers. they are messy and if your chickens have to share the drinking water, they will not stay healthy  They can forage together but not housed with chickens.
When I had mentioned  (light ) I meant light er in weight. a smaller duck will not eat as much as a big type duck. There is a type duck good in eggs and meat but they are heaver  Ducks and chickens are both good foragers and they forage different. Chickens scratch and ducks drill.

My 3 KC and my 2 Roeun, took it upon themselves, to move into my big chicken coop. I had built them there own duck house. They go in with chickens at night. They lay eggs in two of my three coops. In the winter, I put straw on top of my sand base. In the spring all the straw comes out. The ducks have pools to swim, and use the nipple waterers. I have betta 10 watt aquarium heaters in my waters. Ducks are messy, but I keep everything pretty clean. I have not had any issues with my ducks and 30 chickens co-habitating. They like each other! My father raised 2500 broilers and 1000 pekins til ready for market. They mingled when they wanted. Ducks stayed mostly on the pond. They eat the same pellets-everything natural and/or Organic. I get 5 eggs every day from the ducks. The Rouens are very friendly, the Khaki Campbells are a bit smaller and stand offish, but all are gorgeous!

Our new KC girl is a very cheeky little monster at 3 months of age she's like a cheeky 3 year old. We got her from a farm, and i'm certain she was used to getting up early, as she likes to wake me up at 5 - 5:30 am for fear of my neighbors being woken and wanting to kill her....

Here's the real cheeky part, we have a soft-sided paddling pool, and recently the temperatures where we live have been circa 30 degrees Celsius, so we filled the pool for them and set up some steps etc so they could easily get in and out.

The pool water lasts about 10 minutes maximum.

Lady, our female, climbs in using the steps, but then proceeds to stand on the side of the pool, folding it down and draining the water while we watch, she drinks as it goes past, then jumps off and forages in the newly wet grass....

Time to get a pool with reinforced sides

Forgive my ignorance, but how is she waking you up in the morning? Is she making a lot of noise like a rooster or something?

I want to ask you folks something, and I will be blunt- Do you like your ducks more than your chickens? And what breeds of ducks seem to be the most popular and what purpose/purposes do those breeds offer? I'm just not finding much info on ducks and most folks around here that have them have Pekins or Muscovy, so the other breeds aren't mentioned much in my conversations. Thanks

I'm a duck person! KCs, pekin, mallard , welshie,Cayugas! I don't have any Muscovy! I have them for pets/eggs and meat. My mallards crossed with pekin are super egg layers and wonderfully broody. My Cayugas and Cayuga crosses are a great meat bird. I also sell eggs and ducklings. All around great mousers! And my core flock (pets) are just great because!
