The khaki-Campbell duck Thread !!!!!!!!

This is Laurel with her baby Libby. Laurel is in the front. I mated her with a fawn runner drake. Their babies are turning out beautiful

Well....My Coco is still hangin in there! She does have a lil hole behind her wing where I can see where the bone pierced her skin, but she is eatin, drinkin, poopin and somewhat active. So I will just keep her contained to the babycoop outside and bring her in and keep her quiet in he box. I was wondering....should I seperate the gos/and her for a day or so cause I noticed some of her downfeathers missin. I don't want him to be pickin on her while she is trying to heal.

Thanks,
T

Separating them is a good idea - maybe just put some mesh between them so they can see eachother but not make contact. Really glad to hear that Coco is doing well. Might be a good idea to put some antiseptic cream on the wound just to help avoid an infection. Do you think the bone is broken? Is she holding her wing normally?

Good to hear that Coco is hanging in there!

I would definitely separate them, but I do like the idea of having the mesh between them so they can interact safely. In addition, you can let them be together under supervision so you can intervene if he is picking on her.

If the bone did pierce the skin and the wound is open you want to protect from infection while she heals. It may be a good idea to see your vet. Ours looked at our duck on Monday (dog attack) and was able to reassure us that she did not have a broken wing, and he helped us find the right dose of antibiotics for her size. Plus we have been using veterycyn on her wounds which kills all sorts of crazy bacteria and helps the healing process.

Good luck! I have heard ducks are pretty resilient.

Just had to post about my "sexlinked" KC. While Campbells can be sexlinked as described in Storey's guide, apparently this is not what I have! My KC are mixed...or at least one is. The other is maybe a chocolate runner or another KC mix. Either way, they're both beautiful but don't belong in this 'group'

I hope no one was confused by my posts, I know *I* have been confused. Trying to figure this all out, ah well, I love them no matter what.

Duckduckduckgoose...I really hope cocoa is doing well. My thought are still with you both.

History
My Khaki girl is 7 months old. She has laid an egg a day. In the past I've found the egg on the ground, under a tree and on the floor of her hut. I do have a drake of the same age and they live together (its OK they are married). About 2-3 weeks ago I separated her and the drake from my chickens. She started to lay her eggs in the nest box everyday. Then about a week after being separated she started to bury her egg under the pine shavings. Now for the last two days she has been escaping the pen but not going any where, she just hangs out around the pen. Yesterday she laid her egg in the box and buried it before she got out of the pen. Today I found her again outside of the pen but no egg to be found. Later in the afternoon I went to check on everyone and there just outside of her pen was an egg. I'm 100% sure it was not there before and since I have yet to figure out how she get out, I can only assume she got out laid her egg and then went back in.

Questions
Is she trying to hide the eggs from me and wanting to go broody? Is it too late in the season for her to go broody? How often do Khaki's go broody and are they good at hatching?
I was hoping to get an incubator for Christmas to hatch my ducklings and chickens, but would love to have her go broody and do the work for me.

I have three khakis!!! One is laying good, and the other lays one egg every two days. I think shes gonna go into a molt. The two girls are from a local lady and she is a BYC member. And the drake I got at a local co op. Heres the ladys! And the man!

Dose anyone else's KC lay anything besides white/cream eggs? I got my first duck egg today, and am trying to figure out who laid it. I thought her and my ancona were both supposed to lay white eggs. I think the egg is from her, she seems more mature and is more flirty with the drake.

And the egg is white, under the green if that makes any sense. One end of the egg the green was kind of peeled back and white under it?

I imagine I'll eventually catch one in the act and figure it out, but thought it couldn't hurt to ask.

Hi everyone, I'm an Aussie and very in love with my Khaki Campbell's who I guess also are Aussies:) In response to Taylor's request I'll introduce you to my babies, who are now around four months old...so technically adults, although the girls ( five) haven't started laying yet. The drakes (two) are very handsome ( to me). Will take some new pix. tomorrow to show their new feathers :) Their names are Tao and Finn. Hens: Little Kim, Meli, Clio, Tavvie and Lola. Bit sad today because I found the littlest drake, Gaspa, dead in the water, without a mark on him. I asked the chicken forum (being initially a bit mixed-up) for advice and KEVIN answered me and confirmed something I was wondering... if stronger males are capable of drowning smaller, weaker, ( drakes) competitors, when hormones start working? He answered that yes, such a thing is known and that ducks can become quite aggressive, although I'd seen not sign at all of any lead-up behavior. Does anyone have such an experience with their Khaki C's? Posting baby pix. if someone can tell me how...thought it may be as easy as uploadeding my av. image...not very technical...:( Sorry...there is a small pic. of a house (above) telling me to enter URL. Can I just upload existing images from my iPad? Thanks!

Victoria.
