The khaki-Campbell duck Thread !!!!!!!!

Pics
Just recently got my first KC and have ordered 6 more. Would like to see if I can use them for a laying flock alongside my layers and see which are the most proficient for eggs, meat and cost savings.
Up to 320 eggs per year? It seems pretty high.

Also...water.

Metzers says they don't brood their own eggs very often but was wondering if any of you have experienced otherwise?

How predator wary do they seem to be out on range? Good survival instincts?

Thanks for any help you can give me! Just trying this breed out and it's been since the 70s since I had ducks, so I'm a tad rusty.

I have 2 khaki's and 2 muscovies. The khaki's have laid me and egg almost every day since they started laying, even through the winter. They have no added light or heat and I would say they missed a couple days here and there and that was it. I'm gonna say, about 320 eggs a yr for their 1st yr. They have a pond here, but when their in their pen, they love their lil blue pool just as much. Mine stay right around the pond and do not free range far, if there's something in the area (usually my rooster lets everyone know) they head straight for the pond. They are fast and nervous, but will eat mealworms out of my hand if I bend down to their level and have patience. I collect their eggs every day so i don not know about their broodiness, I may have to try leaving their eggs for a few days now to see.

My muscovy is laying on a nest now, so towards the end of may, we will see if I have ducklings. KC's loud and quacking all the time. Muscovies are very quiet and follow me around the yard and allow me to pet them. They are a meat bird, very few eggs, as far as purpose. Or of course a pet

Thanks for the great info on Muscovies!! I'm sure a Muscovy female will be my next duck when I build a bigger house & pen :)!!

My KCs have healed pretty well and a lot sooner since I've had them outside in a large pen. theyare very skittish though and contemplating just letting out to roam property with my beloved scovy who are trained friendly and come when called going right into coop at night. any chance my KCs may do the same along with my scovy or they'll just run off. the KCs are afraid of getting more than heads wet and scream and fight when they get baths.. I'm beginning to think early problems caused retardation as well as leg and body deformation they showed initially. any advice and experience to share??? are all mallard derived or non scovy ducks like this?

My KC female loves water! She is skittish, but once I catch her ( usually distract her w/ food, she's a little pig), she loves to snuggle :).

Have u sen pics of Swedish? Cld it b a Swedish?
We bought that one with the other two at TSC and it was a big batch of KCs. I was just confused because she has a white patch, not a yellow patch like I'm used to seeing in ducklings. Though I am still really new to the animals as a whole :)

My 8 ish week old KC drake is eating my 8 ish week old EE's butt and lower back feathers. He will walk up to them, pull out a feather and eat it. They were all brooder mates, so the pullets arent afraid of him, they follow him around even though he is balding their backs. He doesn't do it a lot, but Im wondering about deficiency. He is on purina flock raiser. He free ranges on an acre all day with two KC ducks. So he isn't bored. Miss Lydia gave me some good suggestions, I was just wondering if any of you have experienced this.

Never seen anything like that. I would separate.
Thanks. I would too, if I could. They all live in our barn together and free range in a fenced pasture. We just got our internal barn coop built, but I would feel horrible locking him or the pullets up. I'm going to watch carefully and see if he grows out of it. He isn't doing it a lot, it's just really weird that he does it at all. He doesn't do it to our larger hens, or the roosters, so maybe as they get bigger they won't allow him to do it anymore. He's our first duckling, so we are learning as we go, and from nice people on here.
