The khaki-Campbell duck Thread !!!!!!!!

I just picked up 2 khaki Campbell's from our local feed store they are about 3-4 weeks old we are hoping for a pair will mine look like the ones in your picture that male is beautiful this is our dirst time with this breed I have pekins and sweds just got 2 muscovie this year also

I really lucked out on my Khaki drake. I have seen a lot of males that are just the brown with a darker brown head. You won't know until they begin to develop their adult feathers.

Thanks , but I was wondering how easy it is to tell the females apart from each other , as I ordered all females from Metzer.
Very pretty ducks though , I love the , blue Swedish is it?I just really like that blue color!

That is harder to answer. I only have the two Khaki females and they are pretty close to identical. One is a little lighter than the other. However, they both have their own personallities and I can tell them apart that way.

Hello All,

I'm excited to join this thread - the four little boogies below just hatched out a couple days ago; our first ducks ever! We actually have 10 more eggs on the way to do another round of incubation as we want to have a nice little flock of Khaki Campbells. We did a lot of research on breeds and chose KCs because of their winter hardiness, their foraging abilities, and of course their impressive egg-laying reputation.

I do have a question for those of you who ar more experienced Khaki Campbell owners. I know they are generally suspected to be able to have a means to escape predators as they can fly some... Have any of you had to be concerned with neighbors' dogs getting at yours? We plan to free range ours as much as possible and lock them up at night, so I am not as worried about the nighttime predators, but we just moved to a new property and have noticed one of our neighbors has two dogs (german shep. & boxer) who gallavant all over the place and are regularly on our property chasing down rabbits. This causes me to feel a little worrisome about our ducks being out in the daytime, though at least one of us is home every day; just not always outside. One thought we have had is fencing and gating the front parameter of our proprty which is the last spot unfenced (we have goat fencing everwhere else which the dogs already can't get through) but that would cost a small fortune, so we are hoping to not have to budget for that.

The dogs can and will kill your birds. You might want to talk to the owner about keeping them on his property (which he is legally supposed to do). Maybe he could split the cost of a fence with you?

You never know what's going to come up. I run into things all the time with these guys where I think, "Oh no, I should have thought about that!"

Truer words have never been spoken! After chasing down my pygmy goats all day after getting them, I never take anything to chance! In fact, my parents and husband often laugh at me, saying I'm taking it a bit too far. Which I may be....but I do sleep well at night!

My ducks and chickens are locked up at night in their run/coop, but during the day they have a large fenced in area they are free to roam and swim in. I would think about building a run attached to your coop. It's not exactly "free-range", but it would be more reliable than expecting the neighbors to keep their dogs locked up. I'm just talking from experience, as we have very large dogs that roam our neighborhood.

Even our little dogs have their own fenced in area they run around in.

Funny you say that even though you might take it a bit too far, but you do sleep at night -- i posted that question in this thread around 2:30 a.m. Already losing sleep over it! haha

It does kinda stink that such efforts and investments have to be made to protect your animals from people who don't follow the law and control their dogs. We'll have Nigerian Dwarf goats, by the way, so hello to a fellow mini goat owner
