The khaki-Campbell duck Thread !!!!!!!!

There is some debate as to the efficacy of niacin given in water since it is a water soluble vitamin. You may consider sprinkling some on the duck's food instead. Just a thought but do what you think is right. No method is really wrong.

Thx for the tip. I got some new food today that specifically mentions niacin in the ingredient list. I also have been giving a electrolyte that has niacin as an ingredient.

Just make sure you follow the recommended guidelines on the littles one's niacin intake. I can't recall it is for ducklings, but do your best to calculate what he or she is ingesting. A prime example is Vitamin C defincies or Vitamin C loading when catching a cold. People think they're benefiting themselves (no hard feelings folks, I do it too) by eating an orange since they are notorious vitamin C "rich" fruits. Some researchers suggest taking 1,000mg daily during cold seasons and such. Oranges have roughly 50mg...so 20 oranges or you could just take one pill the diameter of a dime. Point being, just because the ingredient list contains niacin, doesn't mean it's of beneficial value. Just make sure to do your research...although it sounds like you're well informed already. Wishing your duck the best of luck!

My handsome Khaki :D just over 3 months old. He is going to be one of our keepers.

Most everywhere I read, it says that Campbell's ducks lay white eggs. A few days this week I found a dirty greenish egg in their pen. Sometimes the chickens will wander in there during the day so I just assumed that one of my EEs was laying in there. As they seemed sort of dirty and I had no idea when they were laid I threw them out. Now I am coming across posts here and on other forums from folks who say that their Campbell's ducks lay a greenish tinted egg. My oldest duck is now 16-17 weeks. Have I been throwing out my duck eggs?

he is pretty. I have a 4 week old KC. When does the coloring start to be distinctive and the little curl feather appear?

You'll know by its voice long before the coloring or drake curl appear. A duck will QUACK, a drake will just sort of whisper. If I recall correctly, my drake started to show definite drake coloring at about 10 weeks, the curl took a bit longer.

This one just got his curl in the past 2 weeks or less (around 12-13 weeks). Our Rouen got his around 9-10 weeks old. Our Peking still has not gotten his drake feather. We have another KC that I am certain is another drake but hasn't gotten his drake feather yet and they both have the same hatch date.

Just want to put in my opinion on this: you might not know by the quack if you're not a duck person. I didn't. I assumed my two were quacking (even listening to quacks online they were making a HUGE variety of noises, including the goosehonk sort of noise. I was completely convinced that they were both female due to that. I now know otherwise, both have blue bands and greenish heads, and one has an obvious drake feather...

I need some opinions.. I bought 7 khaki's, my first duck experience, and my first babies :) I think that I have 6 drakes on my hand, and one female... I am no photographer, so don"t mind my terrible picture experience, but this is what all of the "males" look like:

The one female I think I have is completely light brown with no dark edge of wing... Hope I'm at least partially wrong

Difficult to tell with that picture. The lighting makes them all look pretty much the same. Some "signs" to look for are of course the change from a obvious quack to a raspy quieter sort of chatter quack will be an indicator of male. Also, a change in the color of their bill from the darker to a lighter more tannish color will indicate a male. Otherwise you will just have to keep hoping and wait for those drake feathers.
