the lav silkie that had head trauma thread UPDATED ALL BETTER

he was in his own box so no trampling, and I know the flock he came from is healthy, I have been in contact with the seller and she is wonderful. and the others are doing great. They are clean and very healthy with good weight. I think maybe that is just the color of his eye but not sure, it does not look like the type of damage Mareks does to eyes but it was different so I got it on video.

I really think he bumped his head somehow. I will trim his crest tonight and see if that helps.

Isnt he the cutest thing ever! I think he has a good chance, I have had chickens who seemed much worse recover so maybe some time is all he needs.

Thanks for the responces.

He is a gorgeous Lav roo! Did you get your lav pullets/hens?? anywhoo Im daydreaming LOL.. Ive been reading my huge thick vet book on Chicken diseases and cannot find anything on this not even in the neurological sections. I'm going to keep looking because now it's realy bothering me-I had a huge white silkie couple months old and overnight he did this-but his head was down to-wry neck? I nursed that bugger for 1 month and he got worse and worse-I had to put him down and that sucked! So now Im on a mission and hope I find something-in the mean time Im thinking he got a bad knock where his vault is and with any luck it is just like a concussion and will go away with a haircut and pampering:)

gosh I hope so I read this article/website on that sort of thing and it mentions predesone I have some that my ds was given by the dr incase his croup got worse I wonder if it is the same kind....

yes I got the 2 pullets too they are amazing even better looking in person. This breeder really has top notch silkies.

I looked over his vaulted scull and it was not swollen or anything but who knows what is going on inside.

Thanks for lookin that one article was the best thing I could find.

ooh now I cant wait for eggs to be up for sale!! The wry neck for my silkie was treated with Poly-vi-so-Vitamin B and E-nothing worked allthough he ate and drank on his own-he was always knocking over the water bowl trying to drink-no kidding 10x a day I would have to change out the brooder I had him in alone. He knocked over the food too and it made a terrible mess. I had to bath him constantly because he was always wet and covered in food and poo from walking backwards and dragging his poor head. I just couldnt let him go on any further-not on eounce of improvement. He had a HUGE vault-I think he got bonked real bad-he was only in with silkies of the same DOB so I dont know-none of the others got it-or hurt. SO very sad. I hope you can find whats going on and it gets better very quickly. How old are they?

Aww poor baby! That must be so hard for you to watch. I'm no expert but I swear he seems like he's acting like he is blind! Please keep us informed on the little fella.

oh my, that is so sad looking. The poor little guy. Personally, I think all silkies act like they have neurological problems, but never saw any posts where they only walk backwards.
I hope threehorses sees your post. She is very knowle.. she knows alot LOL, and I have seen her respond to some very strange chicken illnesses. I do hope the little guy didn't bonk his head.

Try some serious vitamins, a lot. Sometimes I can get them better sometimes not. I have had them go bothways when they get like that.

I had my Best silkie rooster get pecked in the head. He stopped eating and drinking, and he only walked with his head down, and seemed to have brain damage.

After a month of hand feeding him he passed away.

But I've also had one recover.

Hopefully yours will do better. Feed him lots of vitamin E.

well I just trimmed his crest a bit around the eyes I will probably do more later as it is hardly noticable but need sharper sizzors so the proceedure does not take all day

gonna stop by the beauty supply shop and get the ones used for haircuts

anyway other than that he seems unchanged. I am also gonna get some vitamin E

it is such a shame he is such a nice bird.

he did crow a bit today so I guess he is not feeling bad per-say just "off"

No, please do NOT use prednisone or any steroids on the birds. I'm still reading but wanted to say this really quickly. Only ONLY ever give steroids if an avian vet recommends them for that specific case. (Then honestly it had better be life or death - steroids and birds do NOT mix).

OK going on to read more......
