the lav silkie that had head trauma thread UPDATED ALL BETTER

You might could try using vet wrap to brace his hips........ I doubt he'll like that either. But, maybe you could start around his belly and go between his legs and support it that way.

My dog and cat got a chick and I gave him aspirin and it really helped him for the pain. I used one tablet in one gallon and gave it by syringe.

I sure hope he gets better. He is gorgeous boy.

just sent an e-mail to Rd. Brown at first state. I need supplies since this bird is not willing to give up, still pooping and eating but can no longer stand at all with both legs out like always.

I am thinking I should wrap him in some way but dont have any vet wrap that I hear about and still dont have that injectable antibiotic

I am going to bth him soon as he is covered in poop from being proped up instead of in the sling where he would have not gotten dirty.

I feel just horrible knowing there is a vet but I know x-rays will be $100's and I cant see having any more debt. Besides the seller was so wonderful she replaced him although the new one will be living with Angie a fellow Texan and we wil be egg swapping. But I still would like this one to survive.

ok so I bathed him then blow dried him. then I wrapped him in this ace bandage stuff that was sticky on one end (I did a test strip and it does not seem to really stick to the feathers so I think I can get it off later) Anyway, I wrapped the bandage behind the wings and around the belly then around a few more times then around the legs, then each leg ext, then around the back. he seems well supported. Much of his swelling is gone except in the hip / thigh area and his legs are worse so there must be a break in their somewhere. I am hoping this brace will help keep everything in place while the bones set.

Then I found the hamper my ds had broken the other night, and pulled what was left out of the woven back and then turned it into a little box for him. I propped him with newspaper with a towel over it so that his legs are in the correct position (at least I think so). I even have his back end (which I trimmed as well) hanging off a bit with the lid of the hamper like a poop door. There are paper towels on that end so when he goes I can just change them with the door access.

He has a good appetite and seems comfortable. He watches my ds and I and seems happy in the kitchen

hopefully this will help.

You really have a good heart. There are so many people that would just soon wring its neck than try to rehabilitate it. You are willing to go through all this trouble to help that little guy. Kudos to you all. I think that chicken is one lucky one to have somebody help it like you have. I really hope all your efforts pay off by him getting better. Even if its just enough so he can get around. It's better than being dead. And he will be soooooo spoiled and pampered. He will have a happy life.

Just got off the phone with dr brown. He infact does think it is nerological and thet predensone (steroid) would infact help. So having some from when my ds was sick a few weeks ago is going to help as I just gave the bird the first dosage.

He does not think that anything is broken because of the way he is able to move his legs and such. So I am going to continue the vitamin e and steroid for a while and see if there is improvement.

Please do let us know how it's going. If the prednisone works, that's indicative of inflammation. In which case vitamin E might have effect. Also I'd look into turmeric for anti-inflammatory properties. Just a pinch in the feed or a scant-pinch in a mash.
