The Legbar Thread!

Which raises several questions:
1. Is there a way to determine if a CL that looks and reproduces like a CL is not, in fact, a CL? In other words, does provenance alone trump appearance and reproduceability? Should all birds from a questionable source automatically be removed from a breeding program regardless of their appearance?
2. Is there a way to determine if a CL that doesn't look like a typical CL is not, in fact, a CL? What I'm wondering is how one can prove to eBay's satisfaction that the sale is fraudulent. "This bird doesn't look right" doesn't sound nearly convincing enough to me to overturn a sale unless it's fluorescent purple with green spots. To the untutored eye, a crested, barred bird might be close enough to count, even if it's way off to a dedicated breeder.
I absolutely believe in complete transparency regarding the breeding lines of one's birds. And in theory it makes some sense to cull any birds from a questionable source. The sticking point for me is if some of those birds turn out to be completely typical of the breed.
As I understand it, chickens aren't like dogs or horses regarding purebred parentage. Meeting the SOP is what matters (as far as I know -- please correct me if I'm wrong). But doesn't that risk throwing a wrench into the breed's genetics?
I do not know enough or have enough experience to endorse any particular position here. I would be very interested to hear what you all think on these matters. Thanks!
Full disclosure: I own two female chicks from cindylee53 eggs. I will post pictures as they grow and ask for your evaluations. If I ever sell eggs or chicks (and I may not), I will always disclose their breeding lines. I do currently have, and intend to buy more, CLs from reputable sources.
How old are they? Id love to see pictures of them..

So I got a message from CindyLee and she said all her birds are pure and to send a picture of the chick.
she said she will send me eggs or a full refund and said she was sorry that only one hatched. So I'm going to ask for a refund and see. One thing she gave me her personal email to do it with now should I just keep doing it through EBay to keep things on the up and up? I think I should.
I will be very happy to get my money back.

Unfortunately, anyone could say their chickens are "pure". Did she say where she got them?

Yes, keep your e-mails through eBay. You have proof of everything that way.

I've gotten TWO eggs each of the last three days! Half of them are tiny (31, 35 & 39 grams) and half are nice sized (50, 58 & 58 grams). That makes 9 total so far. Interestingly, the eggs started and then stopped for almost a week when our temps got hot. It cooled off and they started again. Maybe a coincidence, maybe not. The first egg was at 20 weeks. They are just 21 1/2 weeks now. The ones in the last three days have all been pretty blue. :)

I don't plan to hatch any until late winter - but you never know........

Is it too late for you to comment in the feedback on Ebay that the off spring appear to be mixed breed?

Well, I'm not really sure they do. One is a little lighter overall than the other, but their markings are consistent with what I think a Cream Legbar female chick should look like.

Of course, all opinions and evaluations are very welcome. You all have more experience than me.

Updated pictures soon.

So...we know the Cream came from a Pearl Leghorn Rooster and either a Hamburg Rooster or Chilean Hen (or both) too.
I have a two month old pullet that started off rather brown with a tan crest. She seems to be getter lighter as she grows. (This is in contrast to my other pullet that is darker brown with slight gold, and a black crest.) I'm going to eventually mate her with one of my cockerels that is currently showing almost none of the chestnut color. Unfortunately my other cockerel, who actually has a breast, developed a little "poof" on his back near the break of the tail. Then the tail started to go starboard, and now I'm thinking he is showing a roach back/wry tail combo. He's quiet, of good size and color, relatively straight comb and doesn't eat much, so I'll give him some time. He'll likely end up as dog food. (Raw diet seems to be popular with dog people these days. They will take my excess cockerels with less than full processing, then frozen.)

Sadly, the way the feedback works on Ebay...typically anyway, is that you leave the feedback based on the eggs you received, such as how they were packed, on time, etc. From what I could tell, because I tried to do it, you can't go back and add or redo a feedback. It would be a great feature and might put a stop to some of the sellers selling less than what they say in the egg sales. If there were two times/ways to leave feedback. Once on packing/shipping and another with a note about fertility/hatch rate and quality of birds.

I had another seller accidentally send me a wrong kind of egg...easily done, they all looked the same. When it hatched I was expecting it to be a silkie or a showgirl, it was neither. I contacted her and she responded with what it was right away, then because out of 9 eggs, that was the only one to hatch, she offered me 9 more eggs for free. Another seller refunded me right away for two eggs that were broken during shipping. So I really think it is hit and miss with good sellers and people who are honest and not just trying to make a buck. But when you look at feedback on Ebay, most people who are selling have great feedback scores. My lesson learned from all of this is to email them before you bid/BIN and ask a lot of questions. You can also look back through a sellers feedback and contact people who have won/bought similar items and ask them about what they hatched out. Bottom line, buyer beware.
