The Legbar Thread!

I expect that going forward all the cockerels from that pairing will be light. I think the dark chick was sired by the 2012 pairing since the hen hadn't been separated long enough from him to eliminate him as a sire).
I suspect the dark cockerels my be recessive. but I could be wrong

believe it or not. this Dark vs Light genetic info will be use to help the "Rhodebar" breeding project going on in the USA.

I did the same thing you are planning last November. Got 6 eggs 5 hatched and I got 4 girls and a boy. Perfect except I live in town sandwiched between a couple of bed and breakfasts. So I gave away a pair and kept 3 hens. They are nice and quiet, and have caused no issues with my neighbors. I would actually rate mine as very quiet. I get one very nice colored blue egg, a pretty blue green mint one, and unfortunately an olive one.

I chose cream legbars because they can be reliably and easily sexed, and I wanted blue eggs. Living in town I had few choices there have been too many roosters in the sexed ameraucanas and Easter egger chicks around here. I want to take this opportunity to beg those of you that are breeding these birds to think of the "end users" and non breeders. Please remember BLUE eggs, auto sexing. So that periodically someone like myself can enjoy hatching a few eggs and having a few hens.
Welcome to BYC--- you got three colors from one breed. Nice work. -- Your suggestions are very valuable to have breeders keep in mind. Sometimes I have heard that groups breed for only one trait and loose other valuable traits. Autosexing and blue eggs rated highest in a poll that was taken recently. -- You are proof that those values are solid. :O)

The Hen finally started back with her true blue eggs again.. YEA! little muted d/t flash

Here are my CLB.. they are offspring from the original A and B lines from GFF.. :) I think they are such lovely birds and LOVE that I can tell at birth what they are.. :) no vent sexing or feather sexing needed..

wow, this pullet looks EXACTLY like my girl Speedy, who is broody right now -- so exactly that when i first saw the photo, i wondered, how did a photo of Speedy get posted in this thread?

Was wondering how many spikes on a roos comb for sop? I can not find it im sure its here somewhere but im not finding it

Disclaimer: I am not an expert nor have I helped write the SOP, hopefully someone will correct me if I am wrong:

The British standard calls for 5-7 spikes but my understanding is that the APA requires a single number. The Cream Legbar Club is proposing 6 spikes. The roo would be counted down for having more or less, but it's just one factor in judging. What you don't want are any side-spurs on the comb. I don't think DQs have been listed for the American version, but I do believe that side spurs on the comb are either a DQ or a serious defect.

Great job. 6 is the number of points we settled on based on tons of pictures of birds here in America. Side spurs, thumb prints, and folding over 180 degrees in the Rooster are DQs (like combs that look like a female, or bangs covering the eyes).

I can officially post on here! I had my first Legbar hatch ever today!!! I know I have 2 males and am pretty confident that I have 7 females. Here are some blurry pictures. Let me know what everyone thinks of them.

You have no idea how excited I am!!!

Eeeeeee! They are so wee and cute!
It's also exciting that you are in Michigan! Does that make three of us now? I do hope we can get together sometime and swap eggs or birds (if my slacker hen ever decides to lay). Please keep us updated on your flock -- and with lots of pictures!
