The Legbar Thread!

For those of you with unsuccessful hatches-- You know how an idea comes to you while you are doing something completely unrelated - because your subconscious mind goes through the file cabinets in your brain and mixes things together....

What if the Chilean hen that R.C.Punnett used passed along the lethal gene to some of her descendants?? We say the blue eggs came from that side of the family.... could some lines also have the Araucana lethal gene hidden in there.

For those of you with too many males -- sorry -- Maybe next year will be the "Year of the Pullet."

For all of you with chicks. Answer me this: Why haven't you sent your "Cutest Cream Legbar Chick", or "Cutest Cream Legbar Family" to the Cream Legbar Club's Cutest Chick Contest?

Congratulations - hope you get a 100% hatch.  Let us know and post pictures of the babies.  We love baby pictures around here.

Thanks! :)
Though unlikely as I started out with 16! :) 4 were infertile, 4 were quitters, 8 made it to lockdown, but 2 have died before hatching yesterday.
These are shipped eggs and I paid for 12 so I would be overjoyed to have 6 hatch in the end. :)
Fingers crossed!!

How do you tell if the embryo/chick has died before hatching? (other than a blood ring or an exploding egg) I'm new to this stuff.

I take lousy pictures? I posted pictures of my kids a couple days ago and didn't get any comments :(.

I've got a really bright flashlight and can tell after certain days if there's no heartbeat/movement or growth there's a problem. Also, one of my full termed babies hit a vein while pipping and bled out internally. So sad. That looks like a fully developed chick with a big red blotch around a vein and the beak tip in the midst of it (plus no movement etc).

Hey, hey, my first female-favored hatch in MONTHS!!!! Got 4 reg females, one white female, and 3 reg males. One more egg still in the incubator, guessing it won't make it but I will check it closer in the morning. I've finally been able to start saving female chicks for myself which is why the heavy male hatches have been frustrating. I want to have at least 15 or 16 pullets to pick my breeders for next year. I have two males marked to grow out (the last too were very red), one is not very light but it is very gray- no chestnut/brown on him anywhere. We will see how he grows out!
