The Legbar Thread!

We had a donkey and she did not bother our chickens at all but she also didn't scare off predators. I ended up selling her because she needed more training than I could provide.

Hi everyone,
When we built our pens last year, I was worried about critters getting in and killing my chickens, too. We're in a heavily wooded area, and not too many people. We used cattle panels on the sides and the top, then put chicken wire on that. A snake can get in, but that's only happened once.. I think the scent from our dogs may help deter them a little. I put a shade cloth over them for the summer. It's not as attractive as many of y'alls are, but it's safe! lol

There are still many breeders who charge $10 an egg but it seems like it's going down a bit. Honestly, for show birds that would still be a great price. Like pp have said, rare birds will always be more expensive since it costs thousands of dollars to import them.

@Tropix I love your run! My pens/aviaries are similar with hoop coops made from cattles panels. Those are covered in chicken wire. Then the bottom 3 feet are covered in hardware cloth. The back is OSB board, and the front is chicken and hardware cloth wiring. The whole 12 x 8 pens are floored with 3/4" plastic poultry wire, then covered with sand and dirt (occasionally with grass growing) areas. Then the inside of the wood perimeter is lined with bricks on the inside and cement blocks on the outside. And of course the roof is tarped about 3 feet from the ground to keep out the rain....overkill? Perhaps. But we have not had a loss yet from predators

Oh thank you, ChicKat and KPenley!!! There is a tarp pulled over it right now to protect them from some of the rain, too. KPenley, I thought (and now see) that you were the Southern Region of the Cream Legbar Club. I joined just the other day.

I'm looking forward to seeing how the SOP work going on comes out! I have a couple of questions about that, but I'll post them on the CLClub site. Sherry
