The Legbar Thread!

In my opinion, breeders of any breed of chickens keep records of pedigree so they can look closely at what particular crosses produce.

This allows two courses of action - 1- if they don't like what is produced they don't repeat that cross again. 2 - if they do like what a particular cross produced they know how to produce more.

Please corrrect me if I am off base.
Right on base....record keeping is paramount for a breeder.

I keep records on my sheep. I also did it with my Black Copper Marans. put hens in solo pens, had same rooster visit for 3 days them move it. I did this for two rooster and each had own private hens. marked eggs and banded chicks and grew them out.

got rid off one nice rooster as any hen he was with, colored neck hackles or black....this chicks all had lots of color on their chest.....the rooster had only three or so colored feather in his chest but he apparently carried the 'too much copper in chest genes'

the other rooster had nice colored chicks but the pretty much every chick was a carbon copy of their mother....he stayed. I put him to a blue copper and the two chicks that hatched out had more color on their necks and very nice.

if I am going to use the pairs for selling breedable SQ chicks, I mark them from birth. If I am going to raise them for layers, then they get a one color white zip tie (just in case a banded breeder band falls off)

It's very interesting and what I did learn was about 80% plus turn out to be layer quality and not SQ.....

Im totally confused. And obviously out of my league here. I had zero expectations when I posted the picture of my rooster. I did not intend to "ruffle" anyones feathers. I fully disclosed upfront that he had too much color for the standard and at the end of that I do not intend to breed Scooter. Yup

I have a lot to learn about this breed. So could you post Scooter's picture so I can see what too much color looks like?

Oops. I hit reply too soon. I am very very new to chickens. After realizing my mistake from getting chickens from a hatchery, I started to dig deeper into the chicken world and discovered Cream Legbars. I gained respect quickly from reading all the posts in regards to establishing an APA standard. I went on the FB page to gain insight. I posted a pic of my rooster and didn't "engineer" anything. And trust me, I have bigger fish to fry than to be hurt or injured by comments about a chicken.

You didn't make a mistake getting hatchery chickens if you learned how to care for chickens and enjoy the fresh eggs without investing a ton of money :)

I started raising chickens with hatchery stock twelve years ago and don't regret that start. I WOULD regret spending $$$ on a chicken like the CCL before I knew how to care for them. Mistakes can be costly that way.

Welcome!

I thought I would post a photo of my young rooster'; still maturing. I was fortunate to win some eggs this past spring from Greenfire Farms. Several breeds were shipped but out of the hatch I got one male and one female Cream Legbar. Attached is a photo of the male. What do you think. Thanks for letting me share.

He is attractive but has way too much white. From the draft SOP:

Tail: Main Tail—gray, evenly barred.
Sickle and Coverts—light gray, barred, some white feathers permissible.

Likewise on the hackles and saddle feathers:

Neck: Hackle—cream, sparsely barred with gray.
Shoulder—cream, barred with dark gray, some chestnut permissible.
Front of neck—same as breast.

Wings: Fronts and Bows—dark gray, faintly barred, some chestnut permissible.
Coverts—gray, barred, tipped in cream.
Primaries—dark gray, faintly barred, some white permissible.
Secondaries—dark gray, more clearly barred.

Back: Cream, barred with dark gray, some chestnut permissible.
Saddle—cream, barred with dark gray, edged in cream.

Where i would expect to see cream, I see white. While he looks like a nice young rooster, I would not use him for breeding. That said, if your female looks very good or is darker than she should be then it would be worthwhile to experiment to see what they produce.

Post a picture of your female.
