The Legbar Thread!

My Cream Legbar girls have been laying for a while now. Their eggs are of good size and now that we no longer have freezing temps the eggs are OK to incubate. I get about 6-9 a day. They are laying machines. I have saved up about 80 or so and I am ready to place them in the incubator. These chicks will be sired by a chick hatched out from Greenfire Farm eggs last year and one pullet is also directly from Greenfire farm egg last year; different lot number of stock then rooster. The other pullets were hatched from eggs purchased from someone who got their pullets from Greenfire Farms in 2012.

I was going to sell these chicks local and wanted to know what you folks are asking for your "pullet" chicks and also your "rooster" chicks. I was not sure how to price them. I was going to start taking a few orders for these chicks but unsure what to ask in price.

I guess this is called "Counting your CHICKS before they HATCH!!!

BTW, in addition to laying machines these birds are so friendly with great temperaments, no aggression. Rooster is lovely in temperament.

I LOVE THIS BREED!!!! The icing on the cake is Robin colored blue eggs!

Pictured are some of the eggs that I will be incubating. Thanks in advance for ALL advice

I charge $25 each for the pullets and give the cockerels away for free. But as there are a lot of Cream Legbar breeders out there, I expect the price this season to quickly fall to $15 each. Just like with Orpingtons, the focus should begin to switch to higher prices going for quality birds (those closely matching the SOP).

Do you have pics you could share with us of your adult Cream Legbars? That might help determine what you should charge for chicks.

And of course we all like to see pics anyhow.

Here are some photos of my Cream Legbars. Please evaluate. I do know there are some faults in the flock. Such as a couple of the girls have some darker feathers in chest area and Roo has yellow vs white ear lobe coloring, a couple of the girls have smaller crest. One has no real crest, she is also slender in body and a cull. With exception to one or two most of these hens have lovely dept of body and size. There eggs are good sized also for pullets.

Anyway pictured are girls and roo; please evaluate and what would you charge for chicks out of this flock. Pricing both pullets and roos

I was thinking maybe 10-12 dollars since I live in Kansas.

You've got a great start on a flock. They have good type and look very healthy. I am amazed at the coloring of your rooster but it's hard to evaluate from those angles, can you get one side shot of him? He is very light but I can't help but wonder why he has such light barring and so much white in his tail. Did you hatch him yourself? With what you've got and depending on your market I would say $10-15 for a chick is a good price. If I were you I would pen the one cream hen I can see separate from the others and hatch everything you can get from her, to start building a cream flock. The other hens are gold and may be worth hatching from if you have the room to grow out a bunch and start picking cream ones out.

Rinda,

Thank you for your comments. I hatched out my rooster from eggs shipped from Greenfire Farms last year/2013. He is about 9 months old now. I thought he was carrying the cream gene and that is why he is so light. I thought the next generation of pullets would start exhibiting more of a cream appearance because of him. Maybe I am wrong.

Currently, I have all the hens with this rooster and have room enough to grow up chicks when I hold some back from hatching. I thought I would keep the lighter chicks that had the largest crests/bumps on their heads.

Here are more photos of the rooster. His tail feathers although look totally white do contain very light barring in them. Have you ever seen a rooster this color?

Again, THANKS, for comments

Beautiful birds! I would guess that your roo is a double carrier of both cream and barring. The girl on the right in the 10th photo down should help produce boys with a darker chest. Add in some dark gray and you are going to have some show quality roosters! I would echo Rinda on using that cream girl as much as possible, and the others have some fine qualities if you have the space to work with them. Beautiful tails on the two top girls of your second post!
