The Legbar Thread!

Pics
My Golden Legbar started laying yesterday at 22 weeks 4 days old. It was a 49 gram, cream colored, pointy egg. This is not even noteworth compared to cjwalton great news, but I did circle the date on my calander when my pullets will be 22-1/2 weeks old.

I don't remeber who, but someone else on this forum listed 22-1/2 weeks for the time to their first egg, so If it dosen't get too hot in Texas, I will be expecting my fist egg at about that time.

So exciting!

Contragulations cjwalton.

I have seen the photo progress of cjwaltons pair, and that little eggs has some fine parents.

Gary, don't discount your great news! Where did you get Golden Legbars? I thought I saw on the forum not to expect the first egg until 7 months or older. I'm so happy I didn't have to wait that long. My egg is 40 grams. I've been peeking at it all day. It's interesting how it looks different shades depending on light source and time of day. I won't have room in the 'bator until next weekend. Maybe the girls will be nice and give me a couple more to keep it company.

I got my Golden Legbar from a breeder that live 40 minutes from me (H&H Poultry in Burnet, TX). This line is not an English import but rather a line that H&H started from scrach with Brown Leghorns and Plymoth Rocks. They have been working on this project for 5-1/2 years and the line in now breeding true.

My wife thought our little Golden Legbar pullet was one of the prettiest bird in our flock which was a big leverage point for me getting her on board with my desires to pay a hundred dollars a bird to get started with Cream Legbars.

Are they auto sexing?

Thanks,

Ron

They sure are.

The pair I hatched last fall came out with a chipmonk striped pullet and a carmel colored male with blurred stipes and the white spot on the head.

I was very happy with the quality of autosexing in the H&H Golden Legbars. Even my 2 year could sex those chicks.

That is great

Are the eggs a light brown color? I like autosexing, so this would be a third type for us in the United States.

I have started moving my trio out in the mornings since we've been in the 60's here lately. My cockerel is getting his saddles in already and he tries to crow all the time. Not bad for them only being a couple months old.

Just to give an update, another buyer that is hatching my eggs has just hatched a yellow chick out. Once her hatch is done and all chicks are dried, I'll see if she will post some pictures. So, it looks like I will be pursuing these yellow chicks to find out what's going on. I'm hoping to have everyone's help in this as I have no idea what I have here at the moment. I'm still working on who is laying these eggs.

For those interested, the gold legbars are brown legbar (male) x barred rock. Next take the males that have clear and distinctive barring at hatching and mate back to female brown leghorn. Keep only brown barred males and females. Cross these. The resulting twice barred brown males and the barred brown females are the gold legbars. If you want a diagram of this (and the offspring you cull), just PM me. Works more or less the same for cambar (campine), dorbar (silver grey dorking), buffbar (buff orphington), rhodebar (rhode island red), brockbar (buff rock), welbar (welsummer), cream legbar (araucana). Love the pics and updates. Need to reband so hopefully I can post a few photos tomorrow.
