The Legbar Thread!

Some time we use the term "Pure" loosely.

If you are doing a lot of test mating to determine the genome of your potential breeders you may start with 10 birds that are full siblings from birds that have a pedigree that goes 10 generation back but as you test for traits a, b, c, and d. You may find that less than half of the birds are pure bred for all four of the desired traits. You made term those that have the desired traits fixed pure and those that aren't as impure. That isn't to say that if someone else were to test made the birds that you tested for a 5th trait that they would call them all "Pure".

If they aren't out crossed from the original imported gene pool then you can call them "pure", but the original gene pool has a lot of things it it that can pop out and produce birds that don't look right so it won't be the same meaning of the term "pure" that the guy that test breed for 5 different traits is talking about. :)

No, you usually don't see the worms, and swabbing the throat only shows worms if they are actively spilling up out of the trachea... and by then they are suffocating... if she has worms, then yes, it's a safe bet that the rest do as well...

VetRX won't help no matter what the cause is, it's simply the chicken version of Vicks Vaporub... no, you won't see worms in their poop, only through a fecal sample under a microscope would you see worm eggs, or a necropsy you can find the adult worms inside the trachea... if you can get a vet to do a fecal sample, that would be best as it would tell you exactly what kind of worms you might be dealing with... they can live quite a long time with worms and it's not uncommon for only 1 or a couple to show symptoms... it's only when they get overloaded beyond what they can tolerate that they show severe symptoms...

If you can't get a fecal done, isolate her and start her on Safeguard or Valbazen, and only that first... if it's worms, improvement will be seen by the next day and drastic improvement by day 2... if she improves within 2 days of dosing, then that's the issue... IMO, better to try dewormer before throwing an antibiotic at her in case it's unnecessary...

I stumbled across this post and wanted to update anyone who was interested. My CL died in March. I had a necropsy done and she had an enlarged oviduct, was an internal layer and her insides including lung area were full of yolks. She also had an enlarged liver as well as a disease where their bones grow too thick. I actually ran into someone who got a CL from the same batch and hers died in less than one year. I don’t blame the breeder, but want to warn people that the vet believes bad breeding could be part of the cause of her problems. Just do your research before buying.

You are correct . Culling is my personal policy and may not be right for everyone . I may even have Mycoplasma in my flock . No symptoms . Which is not unusual . I did cull 2 pullets early in my Legbar flock for showing Mycoplasma symptoms . Tough decision considering what I paid for the first trio . These were my first ones raised from the trio . I have not seen symptoms since .

The necropsy determined she did not have mycoplasma, but her issues were due to problems with her oviduct and being an internal layer.
