The Legbar Thread!

I know carotene does help with leg color. It can take a bird with average yellow legs and turn them near orange when fed in high enough amounts. With fish, when you feed them macro crabs, it enhances the color as well
X2 do you supplement Beta carotene and how much and how to administer it???

What we've done is feed lots of carrots and also feed with marigolds

What is your secret to get them to eat carrots? I feed leftovers all the time and invariably in a bowl of mixed veggies, carrots are the last to be eaten. I've tried smaller dices and cooking and there they sit.

Isn't it weird how chickens have definite preferences? I put hard vegetables (ends and peelings) in the Ninja (food processor/blender) and mix the resulting veggie mash in with their chicken chow. Add a little fat or oil and it's fine dining.

When we feed carrots, we just shred them with a cheese shredder thing and they eat them with no issue. It doesn't get fed with their normal diet but as a treat in the afternoon. I never thought about blending them, we have one of those magic bullet things that might be fun to use for chickens...

I have a salad shooter..... anything like that from the garden goes it that and I take the SOUP out to them.

Ahh yes, 'cooking' for chickens.
When I think of a chicken cook book it is things like the above - not things like 'Chicken Paprikash'

I was just telling someone about a thread on here for making home made Flock Blocks...... I would love a "Crock-pot Flock Block" recipe.....

X2

ETA I like those ones that didn't they used to be Resolution - who is a BYC member, and the company is a sponsor, and they can be picked up at TSC. Especially now that there are so many predators crawling around the coops and hanging out in the trees and the air - and hooting at dusk and etc. that I really fear letting them free range for the present time.
