The Legbar Thread!

I'm so sad! I went out yesterday morn and my best CCL hen was obviously sick. She was laying down and raising her head every 5-10 secs and gasping for air. Just a little rattley, not "wet" or "gurgley". Her comb and wattles were limp and dusky purple. No drainage from nostrils or eyes. No poop on her feathers. No odor. There were a handful of her feathers in a pile but I think the roos had just been "taking advantage". I put her in a cage and brought her inside. Gave her an injection of Atropine and Penicillin. We'd had a crew out the day before who dug a trench around our house and pumped in 100 gallons of liquid termite killer to treat our house. The company assured me that the chix would be ok since their pen is about 75ft away (and it's a liquid pumped into the ground, not aerosoliized), but I thought I'd treat for poisoning anyway (w/ Atropine). We gave her little syringes of water thruout the day and she seemed to rally, but I found her dead this morning. So far, all my other pens of chix look normal. I checked out several sites on chix diseases and her symptoms are included in several diseases, but nothing was a "match". My chix were all hatched here and haven't been anywhere. We did hv visitors the other day who came to pick up some culls, tho.......

I disinfected all the waterers. Put a pan of bleach water that I walk in between pens. Used aseptic technique when I handled and disposed of her. Then I dewormed all the chix w/ Rooster Booster Multi-wormer. And I'm watching them like a hawk!

I've had all my chix for just about a year now and this is the first adult I've lost. And, of course, it had to be my best hen! Any thoughts or ideas?

I had to put down one of my hens this morning. She was not a favorite one, but an 'older' hen that I could just never get around to culling. She had really slowed down lately, treated her for coccidia, wormed her, upped her protein wth meal worms. I think her body was just worn out.

I know just how you feel........sending you hugs.....

Have you considered sending her out to get a necropsy done. That way you would know what you are dealing with in your flock, if anything at all.

I agree that rooster is really pretty! IMO also one of the very few cream I have seen...so FamilyPenDragon, that one -- and one that TheTropix has are cream. Fortunately there are some others that are part cream -- so perhaps in future generations we can get there.... Perhaps, now that the UK judge weighed in to tell us that Cream = the color of light butter, we can make sure that the earlobe (enamel white in the DRAFT SOP in the USA) doesn't match the cockerels hackle feathers-- because that would make them enamel white and thus not cream. Don't you wish that information was floating around about a year ago? Good eye Puhi!!
Its funny that jills cocks are always winning in the uk shows when id call her roos white white. I wonder if the judge from the UK was talking about cream in general or actual cream Legbar cream when they said light butter. Also i thought jill got her start from Degrey
Yes, the newest line is GFF's 2013 Line. And here they are: First one up is Elvira. I love this little pullet! Then a young roo. This is the light one out of the two I hatched. One was dark but I sold him to a lady who wanted him. This guy has a small crest so I'm hoping that means a good comb but he's got some color too. And last but not least are the 5 chicks my bantam orp hen hatched: 2 pullets and 3 cockerel chicks. All 5 came from the same hen.
is it just me or does all the blood mixing that green fire has done caused these pullets to be way to colorful in the wings and back. They should be a light grey color or am i wrong. Some of my pullets from this year have got that brown color to there saddles and I've been wrecking my mind trying to figure out some pairings to get rid of that color. Also i thought FMP described one of his hens with that type of color in the saddle a while back but I forgot what he said it was from. Maybe my memory is not correct They are really gorgeous birds but if i paid 60 a pullet id want and expect them all to be cream colored like the flagship hens

It sounds like you did everything that you could. Maybe a necropsy would help you know the cause..... a

When I talked to Jill and interviewed her for the Club newsletter, she hadn't shown any males as of last year. The Nationals in the UK in Stoneleigh are today. Have you seen pictures of her cockerels winning on the net? could you link us?

The reading that I have been doing lately suggests that mixing lines of purebreds will bring out a lot of 'burried' things...We were so worried about a gene pool being too small...maybe now we have gotten it too big... Remember too that a lot of the birds we are seeing now are second and third generation GFF. There are two articles I just put in the Clubhouse yesterday that touches on this stuff...if you need direct links PM me.

I was referring to her win last year. Also the pictures of her cockerels on her website was the roo and what i was thinking look white white. its obvious a lot of people think her birds are some of the best in the UK. This is why I brought up the point that hers are white white. the green fire farms Jill birds I'd also call white white not light butter. although after a second look the saddle might be light butter on the green fire farm roo and neck looks white or silver. Kinda reminds me of my roo with butter saddle and a silver neck
