The Legbar Thread!

blackbirds is doing an amazing job she also recently stated her cream hens give a hundred percent cream offspring. GFF had the jump on everyone and there still selling golds for 60 bucks. in my opinion there are allot of people who actually have better stock now than gff.

I know u just love jill but i thought u didnt like the white-white look.
Good insight - I do just love Jill - and I don't prefer the white-looking bird..The unanswered question to me is what range of cream is allowed. The interaction of Cream, Gold and Silver is a bit more complex that originally realized - and this is part of what Cream Legbar owners are dealing with. Did you go through the chicken calculator exercise that I pointed out? To me it is very telling of the coloration.

Ill ask my friend from the uk. Last time i asked he was raising four different lines from the four best breeders in the uk. he liked jillls birds least then stated she doesn't have much competition in shows. there are more quality breeders then breeders who show not that the breeders that show are not quality because they are but I think more breeders don't show then ones that do. Im going to see if my friend knows about the show.
It would be really interesting IMO to get the views of these folks.... You could compile them and put an article in the Newsletter for the CL club, because I know a LOT of people could be interested, and you could start to rack up points for that new challenge in the 2014 contest. The winner of the contest (Full member of the club who has the most accumulated points by June 30th 2014) will win a pair of chicks from GFF of the Jill Rees descendents. Now how cool is that? I say Very cool!!

Thanks but they are still a work in progress. Cream does not mean good cream in all instances as I still have issues with other aspects. But I do appreciate the compliment and from you Steen it means quite a lot. And I do still have my original gold girl and first daughter their egg size and production is just not to be beat. I am going to keep trying to breed them forward and see what happens.

I think I would strongly disagree there are a few people on here years ahead of me that have more show quality birds then GFF. There's also some people who are just getting a start that have better quality. I think GFF is a mixing pot in another few years they might just be the American version of cotsworth(spl??) Legbar. What ive seen from 2013 stock is a backslide

The 2013 line seems to be a mix of good birds and not so good ones. Of the 2013 batch I got 3 pullets were fine but the rest were gold and none of the boys made the cut for me, which was very disappointing as I had wanted a rooster with different genetics to toss in but I have to agree that I viewed using any of the boys they sent would be a backslide for me. I am too picky with who I'd buy from after that scare last year. They are mixing the lines with each new go-around and they did improve somewhat but they are still selling a lot of $59 gold birds. But I really don't think their goal is to create show-quality or the best representation of the breed. I think they just want to offer a rare imported breed to those that cannot afford the initial capital to do so themselves but perhaps are willing to stretch the budget to start with what they bring over. I think getting the birds to a recognizable standard is left to the consumer. I have to admit I am a fan of theirs unabashedly despite their flaws. I am hoping they keep the Rees birds pure for a bit so that what you get will be her pure strain. If they mix them with their own, since they are still selling the gold birds, I can imagine the disappointment that some folks will feel and I'm not sure I'd want to purchase them as her line of 'show quality" birds otherwise but I am non their list to do so some time next year..... gotta get some cash reserved.

I'd like to have a line of her birds and see what they do but not sure if I'd keep them pure for a duration. I do admire what she has done for the breed in terms of recognition and 'rebranding' but I also understand the feelings of those that see a lesser quality to her stock that may have been breeding them more than the 5 years she has under her belt. I do recognize her 'novice' status so I really don't feel beholden to keep a pure line like some want to do with their Bev Davis or Wade Jeanne Marans, but I don't think she builds herself up. I honestly think she just enjoys what she is doing with them but that's just opinion based on a very vague acquaintance. It will be interesting to see how it all goes down. Looking forward to reading your critiques when the time comes.

Why does my complement mean a lot. I hope its not because I rarely give them. I kinda seem like a negator dont I.

As far as keeping her line pure I forget who just went 2 GFF but they said there was one big pen I believe. it made me think they were already mixing.

The lol on the end makes me wonder why you can't wait for my critiques. is it because you agreemost of the time with my blunt harsh views or are they just funny due to my lack of experience, knowledge or negativity

Im used to fluffy birds like cochins having messy butts that need trimmed. I'm noticing some of my other birds that shouldn't be prone to it their getting messy butts. is messy butts the main sign it's time for deworming.

It all breaks down to style and substance. I may not always agree but I appreciate the point of view and the intention that comes with it. Teaching has taught me how to euphemize my statements a bit as can be quite blunt myself and maybe come across a bit severe when I'm actually joking.... I blame the Marine Corps. I drip of sarcasm in my best moments. I think we all can claim lack of experience and knowledge with this breed. Cheers.

I'm not sure if the messy behind is a sure sign of worms/pests, but I know that my eggs got a lot cleaner after I finished the Fall deworming/dusting a week or so ago...so maybe???

Sometimes dirty behinds can indicate 'gleet' - never knew what that was - but I think it is a yeast infection in the chickens digestive tract. You can put up to 2TBSP of Apple Cider Vinegar in 1 Gallon of water - this will change the pH of the chickens gut to a degree that will be less favorable for the growth of yeast. You may also want to look into some probiotics....there are lots of ways to get them into your chickens... TSC has little packets that mix into 1Gal of water.... Save-a-chick electrolytes and the Probiotics. There are lots of other sources. It is one way to work on cleaining up the fluff. It it is particularly bad...there's always the fun of a chicken bath....fun fun fun!!
