That would be so awesome to zap the eggs with some kind of laser beam!!!

J/K I think she means, do you use artificial lights when the day light gets shorter?

I guess if I had used the term artificial lighting it would have cut down on the confusion. The lazer light remark made me laugh.

I do use lights in the hen house to keep eggs coming in the winter. But I never use a heat source in the hen house.

well... Curtis did read up earlier this year about microchips that could be scanned as hens went in and out of the box...but that's a little too expensive for me.
If I could buy it I would. The time it would save would be worth the money. I can get the RFID tags for the hens, I just don't know how build a reader or how to program software from the reader to my computer.

My hens are all on natural light in the winter. :)

How about $18.95 per hen (ouch!) These tags are stylish and, as far as I know, typically attached to keys : Tiles

so cool normanck.... Can you just picture each hen wearing a necklace, on the necklace a tile...that would last ...hmmm 5-minutes? It would be very pretty though. If you ever go to a BLM wild mustang/wild burro sale - the horses have ID necklaces on -- (or they did last time I went to one...) Pet jewlery - the newest industry....can you see chickens with toe rings and ankle bracelets to go with their tile necklaces... Oh, they already have bracelets..we call 'em legbands....

Seriously though...

there have been RFID tags for cattle for some long years....

wireless blue tooth reader $1,850, software for reader 88.00/year... individual tags...$2.10 to $2.42 each.. cha ching!

You don't need a $1800 scanner if you have an Android phone. As it turns out, I am a professional app developer. When I have time in the Spring I will write an app to read those tags. I would do it now but I have a backlog of clients wanting me to create apps for them before their fiscal year ends. Someone remind me in late Feb or March and I will create it and distribute it for free. It will be my contribution back to the BYC community.

Please excuse my ignorance...but how would this work? Like would you have to put an android phone at each nest box?
