The Legbar Thread!

Hi all--I have 2 Legbar hens that lay 1 egg a day on a regular basis--and are just under 1 year old. The question is about how small the eggs are. Great sky blue color. But so small? Probably about a noticeably 1/2 size of a regular large egg. Any ideas?

Thanks!

How long have they been laying? It usually takes a few months for pullet eggs to get larger.

You may want to check the weight of the eggs. Eggs are sized by weight strangely, and CL eggs seem more dense. Grant you a particularly small egg cannot weigh a lot....but the other day I was surprised that an egg that looked 'medium' to my eye was over 2oz which puts it in the "Large" category.

Another interesting thing, is that when I broke a store-bought egg (still left from before when my own chooks started to lay again)- and one of my own eggs, the size of the yolk in comparison was much larger in home grown, visibly larger by about 40-50%. It would seem that the yolk would be the part of the egg that contains the most nutrition -so I would think it would be an advantage.

Again, egg "size" is based on weight - and it could be that CLs have a denser egg than some of the other breeds. Now this isn't to say that a tiny egg would be more marketable than an enormous egg -- but it depends on if you want quantity or quality as well as just the looks.

I have one who lays a smaller egg, too, avg. 48 grams while my other two lay eggs around 55 g. I give them to my friend who boils them for her grandson, who loves the little blue eggs! Mine have all been laying for 5 months now.

My two pullets that have been laying started with eggs in the 1.2-1.3 ounces. One has now been laying for four months and another for two months. The eggs from the first layer are normally 1.6-1.7 ounces. The later layer's eggs are from 1.7-1.8 ounces and she is a larger bird than the first.

I weighed the eggs and they come in at 1.5 oz.

I have 2 pullets that are laying. One is starting at about 45 grams (1.6 ish ounces) and the other is starting at about 55 grams (1.9 is ounces). The CL eggs do seem to be shaped a little differently than 'regular' eggs, maybe a little more oval or blunted especially on the big end which might make them look smaller since they are a little shorter.

The air cells seem a little smaller on candling before incubation but this may be a factor of the blunting on the large end of the eggs. Anyone else seeing this in their CL eggs?

I've noticed their air cells are small and they don't get much bigger during incubation either.
