The Legbar Thread!

How do you like the R-Com, and have you used other brands?
I love the R-Com. The last batch of shipped eggs, I got 10 out of 12 hatch in the R-Com. You can set the rotation period, for example, every six hours or so. That is a huge bonus for shipped eggs.

I also have two Brinsea 20 Ecos. They are junk and only work now because I replaced the thermostat with another I found online.

As a fallback, or if I need more capacity, I also have a Hovabator Genesis. It holds more and is very reliable. But for my Cream Legbar eggs (my own eggs), I did not get a good hatch rate in the Genesis. I did with other breeds so maybe Cream Legbar eggs are more sensitive to humidity changes. The biggest design flaw of the Genesis, and really most incubators, is that you have to open them to add water. With the R-com, there is a little flap on the outside. So no need to open the incubator at all.

I put a plastic tube through the vent holes on my incubator to add water. I don't have to open the incubators to add water that way. It works great. Especially for adjustment on hatch day.

X2 I get a clean straw and put clean water with a bit of oxine through it with a little funnel. Then take it out and let it dry well. (Genesis)

If I open the incubator before all the chicks hatch I have disastrous results with non pipped eggs.

Yeah but the R-com sings a little tune to tell you to add water. And trust me, I need to be reminded. Another feature that I wish were in other good incubators like the Hovabator is that the humidity is adjusted by heating the water. So the heater does not have to kick on whenever cold water is added. It's similar to how humidity is adjusted for reptile tanks.

But the Hovabator Genesis is a good incubator for the money. You can buy three Genesis incubators for the price of one R-com 20 Pro. So it's can be seen as more cost effective.

But had I done it all over again, I would have only bought a cabinet incubator. More volume equals better hatches.

Your chickens are so lucky to live with your wife's art work. ;O)

Stanley has the shortest tail of any Cream Legbar I have ever seen. Stanley also has the most intense coloration. Does it make you wonder if he has that hidden rumpless-genetics that Araucanas have --somehow brought to the surface? If I am looking at him correctly, his wing triangle almost looks black. Is there any chance that another breed of chicken was mixed in with his genetics? If you got hatching eggs, perhaps the person that you got them from switched hens, but didn't wait quite long enough to be sure that any previous mating was completely cleared from the hen's system? Something seems amiss with Stanley.

Did you hatch eggs, get chicks, or buy him? What is the source of Stanley? How old is he?

He looks like a chicken of interest for his unique appearance, but most likely you wouldn't want to use him to breed Cream Legbars, especially if you wish that he were more cream in appearance. Fortunately there are a lot of CL roosters who need good homes so if you wanted to get roosters it should be fairly easy for you to get that increase in cream appearance that you are looking for.

Here is a chicken pict. from the Cream Legbar hybrid thread..... This seems a lot like Stanley--- it makes me think that he is a hybrid.

Thank you ChicKat! I bought Stanley from someone in Central GA. 2 Roo's and 2 Hens. They were advertised as Crested Cream Legbars. I had not researched Legbars thoroughly enough to know the difference at the time. I was just excited to get them. I did notice that the hens had no crest. I have no real background other than that. I do like Stanley and the girls but I will continue my search to get Crested Creams. I was talking with Enola and got very excited about this breed which at that point I jumped at the opportunity to get these. I really want to focus on the Crested Cream Legbar to be one of our main breeds.
Stanley is 12 weeks old. I was thinking maybe his tail would get a bit longer in time. He is a handsome fellow! :) And I agree, that he does look a lot like the pic of the hybrid that you posted. I really appreciate your input! thank you!

In pics you posted previously, maybe a few weeks back I recall seeing another male in the background. Do you still have him and if so do you have pics of him?
Hello Chicken Pickin!

I wish I could post more pics of the other male but he didn't make it. I found him dead in the coop the second day after I brought him home. I had basically quarantined the 2 hens and 2 roos. I noticed that the small male was a bit standoffish. He would keep his back turned to the rest and acted a little strange but did not seem to be sick or lethargic. When I bought the 4, they were free ranging with several other breeds and were caught in a fish net then put in my transport pen. I was thinking maybe the gentleman I bought them from may have injured him at that time.

Had to show off my fluffy butts!
