The Legbar Thread!

Are you kidding? I would buy them just because they are related to the white ones. Girls or boys, well more girls than boys, but either one or both. PM me if you are willing to ship. Or maybe I could find a reason to go to MD.

I have no problem shipping though I would rather wait until they are a bit older. And since dad carries the recessive white gene, these chicks should have it too.

The white Legbars come from the recessive white gene. Both my rooster and at least one of my hens carries the gene which is why yellow chicks have been hatching out. Yellow chicks grow up to be white Legbars with no a bit of color on them. When the recessive white gene is expressed in a chick it masks all color hence the white birds. Very few people have them in the US. I've been hatching like crazy so that I can start breeding them. Oh and they are autosexable. It's just a bitter harder to do when the chick is different shades of yellow.
What do you mean by whites?

I had a friend give me a legbar chick because it wasn't autosexed- it came out white. He's now 4-5 weeks old, and I think it's a boy from looking at the comb, but is still all white. She felt like he wasn't fit for breeding because he wasn't fitting the "type" at all. I hadn't realized he would be at all desirable.

This isn't the best picture, as I was trying to get the group, but he's the only white chick in the group, kind of in the middle.

Do you have pictures of male and female yellow chicks? Wondering what mine are and pics woud probably help. :)

If you take a regular male and female chick, compare them to the yellows. Notice the outlines of the colors on the regulars. If a yellow chick is a female, you will see the same outline pattern but in different shades of yellow. Same with the males. Wait until they are completely fluffed out. I just looked at the one that hatched yesterday next to a regular female. Same pattern and lines, just different color.

Okay, cool. Will have to look at these two in a little while, once they've completely fluffed. When they were partly dry, one appeared to have a little bit of reddish tint on the top of the head. Maybe a female? Will have to look again. LOL Just so excited. My husband had to come out and tell me to leave the bantam cochin broody alone.

I did notice the one I just hatched has a darker color down on top of her head. Then I can see the yellow chipmunk stripe start at the top of her head and fan out down her neck and back.

Since you started hatching your own eggs. How many white chicks have you hatched?
