The Legbar Thread!

Man, just finished reading all 183 pages

. So much good info. Okay so back history at the beginning of the year I had Barnevelder Roo and a Barred PR Hen. When researching what the cross would be I found out about "Auto sexed" breeds. I had never heard of them before, just sexed linked. The idea is GREAT. So I bred the two and kept a great Roo, I will then cross that Roo over some pure Barnevelder hens, creating my own Barnebar, brown egg/auto sexed (I know it will take 4 gens, so a work in progress).

But of course I can't have just 1 breed of auto sexed

So when I saw a listing on CL for Crested Legbars I turned to BYC and I stumbled on this thread about a blue egg/auto sexed bird. I decided I must have them!!!!

Then on page 131 of this thread Gary Dean posted on how to get different colored egg. So, if I have a brown and a blue, gotta have a green right? To do this would it work to put a Legbar Roo over a Barnevelder Hen? Or would I need a Barnevelder Roo over a Legbar Hen? The babies should be auto sexed correct? I really hope it is Legbar Roo over a Barnie Hen, that would work perfect for my current set up and not require another pen, well not right now at least

.

If that works then my next step would be to get some Gold Legbars and I would have an auto sexed breed of every egg color!!!!!

I was trying to figure out how I could have sex-linked layers out of leghorns and really what I wanted was blue layers and figured using a leghorn would be part of the mix...then I found out the work had already been done and was better than just being sexlinked:) I'd also been admiring polish cresteds. I LOVE google! I'm gonna have to polish up my hatching skills now that I've found something I feel worth while to hatch. The chickens I hatched last year I think I could have sat on the eggs myself with less stress. I just have a LG still air and got 75% hatch on my first attempt but I was sure I cooked and froze them several times.

Hi everyone - sorry I have not been on this thread much. I have been tied up with newly imported birds from the UK the past few weeks. We will have some surprising birds released in the Spring.

These are on my site - but here are some pictures of our CL. Right now the egg production from our girls is down a little. :( The picture of the eggs maybe off a little due to lighting - but they are a pretty blue tinted color.

One last thing... I am not here much anymore as I have too much going on at the farm. The best way to reach me is via my email that is posted on my site.

Take care,
Richard

WANT!!!!! OMG, Richard. Both the birds and eggs are fabulous! I have written to you on your website a few times with questions. One day I will get some CL and Isbars from you! Perhaps after January. Save me some! I live in Dawsonville, GA....let me know if you come this way.

My regular mixed flock of seven hens gets to wild forage during the day. A month plus ago I added in a cream legbar rooster to the mix and more recently, about a week ago added in 4 cream legbar pullets (non-layers) and another cockerel. For a few days, egg returns have been low. Yesterday there were only 3 eggs, so I figured they are laying elsewhere. It's hot. There's a lot more going on in the coop, who could blame them? I had been seeing Vera, my favorite, little black hen going into a cat hole in the garage. Previous owners made a garage spot for their pet to sleep in, so after checking some bushes and other common areas I head there. Eureka!! Surprise!! Two eggs. Not just any eggs, two blue eggs!! My first! Will share egg photo tomorrow.

This is amazing because I have blue laced red wyandottes that I thought would begin first. The wyandottes are larger, been showing bright red for awhile, and about 10 days older.

Exciting, eh?

VERY exciting! I am brand new to chickens and we just began collecting our first eggs last week...4 eggs in 4 days! :) I am about to go out and stalk the coop to try to find out who is laying. It is either my Black Australorp, Buff Orp, or BLRW. I don't have a Cream Legbar...YET...but hoping my EE will give me a blue egg soon!

Can't wait! Congrats on your little blue eggs!
