The Legbar Thread!

My regular mixed flock of seven hens gets to wild forage during the day. A month plus ago I added in a cream legbar rooster to the mix and more recently, about a week ago added in 4 cream legbar pullets (non-layers) and another cockerel. For a few days, egg returns have been low. Yesterday there were only 3 eggs, so I figured they are laying elsewhere. It's hot. There's a lot more going on in the coop, who could blame them? I had been seeing Vera, my favorite, little black hen going into a cat hole in the garage. Previous owners made a garage spot for their pet to sleep in, so after checking some bushes and other common areas I head there. Eureka!! Surprise!! Two eggs. Not just any eggs, two blue eggs!! My first! Will share egg photo tomorrow.

This is amazing because I have blue laced red wyandottes that I thought would begin first. The wyandottes are larger, been showing bright red for awhile, and about 10 days older.

Exciting, eh?

Very exciting--- congratulations on the blue eggs.

Has this happened to anyone else?

My cream legbar pullet is just 28 weeks today. She is laying regularly---and now I am ready to start saving some eggs for incubation. She flirted with broodiness....making a funny sqwak and raising her hackles when I open the door to the egg port and she is in there. But now seems to vacate the nesting box fairly regularly---but then maybe go back after she has laid her egg -- to pay a visit to whom ever is in there or..... in response to instinct to be near the nest?

her eggs were....actually just about LARGE size around the 13th and 14th

there's a chart from one of my pages.... I weigh the eggs..... (don't say it...I already know it)......

but then her eggs went to very small...and now they are hovering about the small to medium size. My other layers are laying normal to large. I think today's Legbar was 1.7 and some ounces....

Is it the heat? Is it because the other chooks are mean and chase her away from the feed? We still aren't through the heat...as yet...I suspect. So I don't want to have to try to cool down the brooder.... So I'm just saving all her eggs---- I'm just curious if there has been a size reduction in anyone elses....I see that somewhere a mention of fewer eggs.... due most probably to heat too I suspect.

Anyone else have small eggs? any ideas? Thanks if you do.

Thanks ChicKat.
I've never had a laying CL but many other breeds I've raised (maybe all of them) lay smaller eggs during periods of heat stress, which means every July and August where I live. I'm pretty sure about this because I weigh them too. (Confession is good for the soul.)

I can't comment on the change in egg size, I haven't noticed that and our temp have been 100+

But don't worry about the other, would you like to see my spreadsheets on recording the grams for each egg from my very first? I even made my son weigh them when he chicken sat while we were on vacation. (I know, he probably just put down random numbers

Hehe - my first chicken just started laying about 2 weeks ago and my kitchen scale is not sensitive enough to give me accurate enough egg weighings. I have been perusing eBay for a good scale. I keep talking myself out of buying one because it seems a little OCD. Now that I know it is normal....

Richard,

These are beautiful pictures!

My CL that I got from you in March are maturing nicely. Can't wait for eggs!

Hi everyone - sorry I have not been on this thread much. I have been tied up with newly imported birds from the UK the past few weeks. We will have some surprising birds released in the Spring.

These are on my site - but here are some pictures of our CL. Right now the egg production from our girls is down a little. :( The picture of the eggs maybe off a little due to lighting - but they are a pretty blue tinted color.

Egg #1 of my hatch is a boy! My first replacement for the roo I lost. The second was a WHITE! My first. Lots of others have hatched them from my eggs but this is my first! Don't know what I'll do with it but I wanted to hatch one for sure.

I have two girls who just started laying in the last couple of days. One is laying a deep blue wind egg and the other a small double yolker. They are seen here next to a normal sized Isbar egg.

Here is my new roo.

Both of my girls have stopped laying. It's been over 2 weeks since I've seen blue eggs from them.

I swear I think they are molting. The rooster has lost some tail feathers and I notice the hens losing some back feathers. Seems I have birds molting every where but at least some are still laying
