Hmm, quote and multiquote aren't working for me right now... so in reply to some the above threads:
I did have one my CL roos come after me once, he received the swift kick that happens when any rooster does that and hasn't tried since. He went after my son a day later and got another swift kick. I have not had any trouble with any of my other roos including two that are the same age. The cockerels also have been fine. i have two cockerels in with that particular roo and he seems fine with them besides the occasional "I am boss" peck. He is definitely on two strikes though so one more and he's gone.
while free ranging two separate legbar pens, two roos were doing that lion mane fanning out of their feathers. It was awesome to watch. They were all show. no actual violence which made it fun to watch. i so wish I would have had my camera to catch it. I may have to let them out together soon just to see if I can get a pic.
regarding the Basques, it's true I have some cockerels in my grow out pen that i am not convinced I know which they are. They grew up together and I didn't band them because they looked so different growing up...now all of a sudden, I walk out into the pen and i'm like... which one are you? for my purposes they are out for the breeding program as I don't want any basque cockerels that look so similar! my other basque roos look nothing like my CL roo and are closer to the standard, so I'm keeping those to breed.
my CLs roos have been pretty mellow with the ladies but the one pen that I have started hatching from there is apparently a hen who he doesn't pay much attention to or a fertility issue in her. gonna watch for the next week or two, but she may get pulled and tried with a different roo to see if it's just not a good match or something with her.
really enjoying these chickens! i still prefer them over the basque although the basque have been growng on me. They feather out so fast and my roos got big fast. I like both of those traits. should be starting to lay soon so we'll see about egg production.
