The Legbar Thread!

What about using a google spreadsheet doc for now? It can be shared by many, each person could have a "tab" but all the "tabs" would request the same info. Just a thought.
That is brilliant. Just now I am beginning to get into the world of google. That means everyone would need a gmail account if they wanted to participate, and... would it reside in the google 'cloud'?

If you have insight into this...it may be exactly what we would be able to use. Great idea. (From my limited Google knowledge at present).

Hi everyone....I have not been on here in a while thought I would say hello and give an update. My 4 birds from Jordan Farm are doing great, growing and looking good. I am also happy to report that my six from madamwfl are in the mail and on their way to me as I type this. Incubators are all shut off and we are getting ready for the change in weather here. We are just about finished with our pole barn and then on to another chicken coop with breeding pens. Hoping we can get it done before the snow flies.
Wow, that is fabulous. Sounds like things are going great....and breeding pens..new chicken coop.... Hmmmm.

I moved my broody Cream Legbar last night and everything seemed O.K. This morning she wasn't on the nest...to which she has been glued. I thought maybe it was just a break...but as I checked the eggs they were cool to the touch. In a panic I grabbed two of her remaining 3 and put them in the incubator. Then I figured if she was going back to the nest she would have one. Then I thought if she has one and it hatches she may end being broody. So I threw 3 fake eggs in there with the one real egg.

During the day she didn't seem to be back to the eggs...but I checked and they seemed warm.....

Meanwhile in the incubator one of the pips started to zip and around 4PM a new baby. A boy... Then he was dry and it was getting dark. Hatch day is tomorrow not today...so he would have spent tonight and all day tomorrow in the tiny incubator. (there are two pips in there now-- not much other activity).

By sundown my hen was back on her nest. I grabbed the little guy and put him under her. She clucked and settled down...he stopped peeping. Could it possibly be the successful graft I was hoping for?

The baby looked a LOT like the one in CarolJ's photo. I go also by the Cleopatra eye make up - dark eye stripe on the girls. The boys seem to have eyes ringed with white.

Let us know when fluffed what the new chick looks like/is. Congrats.

My last 2 eggs will hatch this weekend most likely as they really are hatching out on day 19-20 pretty consistently, but hatch-day is next Tuesday. The five in lockdown which was yesterday have 2 hatched (day 19) and 2 pipping. One is still silent. This is wonderful as I have no patience once the eggs hit lockdown. There's one girl and one boy in there. The girl, from my cream girls eggs, will probably be a keeper but not the boy, golden girl egg. Though I have one juvie boy from the same pairing that is about 12 weeks and he has a nice crest and I'm watching his comb and color right now, he is getting come chestnut on the saddle and wing but so far not a lot on his hackle - so he's probably not going to be a keeper. Depending on what hatches next I'll have some decisions to make as one of the two eggs are from my golden girl. I have 5 boys from my younger girls eggs that I plan on watching grow out. There are also 4 other females that I plan on holding on to. I'm gonna watch the other girls and boys for a while and then decide what I want to do - they may go into a layer flock or into a flock that I can use to make chicks/layers for local sale next year or I may use them to breed as the eggs they came from are nicely sized and larger and maybe I can breed out the gold as I go forward... so much fun ahead.

I will have to line breed going forward to try to 'cream' my flock as I am planning on breeding towards the UK APA and Punnet's Cream coloring. I think it'll definitely be at least a few years before I even start to be satisfied with my flock. I really don't keep the kind of detailed records that are being discussed - I just don't have that kind of time. I have definite opinions on the color and type I want to breed towards so I'm gonna just try and keep working with what I have but will be willing to share any information that I can in order to help forward this breed in a positive way.

I'm wondering if the dry incubation is having an effect on this early hatch-day phenomenon I am having or is this par for the course for some? I know earlier this year my hatch-say was closer to day 21+. Dying to try it out on some BCM eggs.

My larger coop is almost done but I have the chicks brooding in it right now...the hubby is so happy that the chicks are not in the basement with his new pool table.

Quote: My chicks are 1 week today and I want to weigh them now but can not find my digital scale (only goes to 500 grams..how do we weigh them when they get bigger? a baby or fruit scale? or do they have those hanging scales where we can stuff them in a ditty bag and weigh. I still have not taken first picture. I want to take one each week till full grown..also mine are from 2ND or 3RD line what color leg bands do i use on them / I will name chicks and register my numbers on eggs too, so I can record hatch and survival rate and what flaws I see in each generation..

Quote: I just went last week and got my 2 pullet chicks from madamwlf and they are darling...I named them Eve and Lilith (Adams wives) we will work out what to do about breeding in spring as DH has cancer and I am afraid roo crowing will drive him nuts as run is under his window..you know if we could breed a non crowing roo we would be rich. Eve has dark brown stripe and Lilith has black stripe..I noted this just to see what coloring they grow into.. She has the biggest most perfect comb on her roo..he is so handsome.

That does sound great, gmail is free etc. and google has a LOT of advantages once you go through that door. So we certainly have enough of us to experiment with some options. YEA.

Congratulations on the babies! Sounds like you have a solid plan for going forward, so do keep us updated at the progress. .

Adressing your 19-20-days question, I had a chick hatch yesterday evening---a day 'early'. Need to check the incubator now for status--but today is hatch day.
