Chapter Ten
"Please, I didn't do anything wrong!" Immediatly after I said that, I knew it was a lie.
The family kept their cold silcence as they began to surround me. Whatever they had wanted to do before, I knew they would do now.
They tilted their heads to look at me. Here I was, a small starving chick surrounded by a bunch of plump, well cared for birds who, as far as I knew, hated me.
My opponents gave me a look that was more than a stink eye, more than annoyance. I paniced, not knowing what to do or say. Shuddering, I backed up against the bars of the cage and pressed my back there as far as it would go. It felt stiff and cold against my sparesly feathered wings.
Now, the silence was broken.
In a screech, the family dove towards me. They tore at my newly feathered body and grabbed me in their sharp beaks and claws.
I tried to fight back, but was almost immediatly exhausted.
Stopping my stuggle, I had a chance to think.
Were they really going to kill me?
Were they that... that... evil?
And if they did, would they... eat me?
Escaping from my fright and into the real world, I saw they were dragging me towards their food bowls.
They dumped me in the water and littered it with seeds.
I screeched in pain. The water was filled with old food and solid waste.
The soiled water made my various cuts and bites sting.
Suddenly, I stopped yelling and pleading in pain to hear footsteps descending the steps in the stairway.
It was the human! Had he come to rescue me?
Seeing me stare, the family of birds immediatly gathered around me and covered me, stood on me, so that the human would not notice me.
I screamed as my head went under the water, but there wasn't much else I could do.
My short life was flashing before my eyes.
I was seeing what I thought my future might have been when the weight on my head was lifted, and the water bowl was brought out. I heard the human exclaim in surprise, and he dropped me.
At that point, I was all but dead.
