I was so excited this morning, my first talking lesson! I woke up extra early.
"Polly! Polly!" I yelled, "This is my first talking lesson! Wake up!"
Polly lifted his head from where it was resting between his wings, and opened his beak with a yawn, "Well, you're an earlybird. Next time, can you possibly wait until everyone's awake so we don't disturb anyone else's sleep?" He asked good naturedly.
"Oops, sorry. I was just really excited," I apologized.
"No problem. I'll give you your lesson once everyone is up."
I looked outside boredly. There wasn't much people, just a few who were cleaning the floor, cages, and feeding the animals. I began to preen.
An hour later, everyone has woken up, so I asked Polly, "Can you teach me now?"
"All right, now is fine," and so began our lesson.
"First, you have to be in a good mood, excited about learning to talk. I assume you are more than ready," He began.
I nodded enthusiastically.
"Ok, next, try your best to repeat what I say. You have to be persistant, and not easily frustrated, can you do that?"
I nodded again.
"Here goes. Hello," he said in human.
I croaked, then hid in a corner, embarrassed.
"Good! That's a start. Every good talker is like that at first. Try again." He encouraged me.
Again, I croaked, a little better this time, but still didn't sound much like the word.
"Hello," He said again, in case I needed reminding on how it's done, "Keep practicing!"
I practiced all morning that day, and finally, I got to what sounded like, "Ehlloe" Polly was inpressed. He said that I had a talent for this, especially since it is hard for girl budgies to talk.
I proudly practiced throughout the rest of the day, trying to perfect it. Every once in a while, Polly would say it for me so I had a fresh memory of how it sounds like.
"You're getting really good!" Polly said to me later that day, "Not every bird gets it on the first day! For some, it takes months! It took me almost a week to get it. I'm not a great talker for a yellow naped amazon."
"Is that what you are, a yellow nape?"
"I sure am! Just look at the yellow on the back of my head!"
"But it's a bit above your nape..." I pointed out.
"Yes, yes it is. And that's part of the reason my owner didn't want me. I'm not a perfect bird. That, and the fact that I scream a lot. I just wanted to keep in touch with them! I didn't know they would be annoyed!" He said sadly, and a bit angrily.
"Wow, that doesn't sound fun," I chirped sympatheticlly.
"It isn't," He squacked back.
I sighed. Misunderstanding humans who put us in misery. All in a parrot's life.
