Chapter Thirteen
"What do you mean 'is there'?" Pepper was clearly interested in whatever I had in mind.
"I mean if I teach you to talk, you can read what's on the paper for the humans! Polly said that if someone learns one word, it will be really easy to learn another!"
"Apple, you're a genious!" Pepper squeaked, "But how will we know what it says in human ?"
"Well... Maybe some other bird might know something," I had an idea.
"Um, attention everybird!" The twittering in the room quieted. All eyes were on me. "Well, I'm trying to help Pepper here get adopted,"
Pepper flattened her crest shyly.
"I'll explain the details later, but here's what I need to know," I continued, "Does anybird here know how to talk?"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
So now, I have a list of words the birds all know. Pretty, bird, Polly, I, Want, Millet, Cracker, Can, read to me!, Lightbulb(random, right?), talktalk, and imitate a phone ringing. They also taught me the meaning of each one.
I thought of the words as a mental list in my head. Hmmm... "I" must come in handy if Pepper were to say it. In the phrase, "read to me," we would need the word, "read". Then, just add the "Can", and I've got it! "I can read", let me try that.
"Ei can weed," I said slowly.
"You've almost got it!" trilled a quaker parrot.
"Ei can wreed,"
I tried again, "I can read!"
"I've got it!" I whistled triumphantly.
"Ok, so now you try it, Pepper."
"I can weed," Pepper said shyly
"You're almost there! Try again." I encouraged.
"I can read," Pepper said, "I've got it!"
"Great!" I chirped, "You can learn the phone ring to catch people's attention. It's getting late. We can do part two tomorrow."
I sounded calm, but I was super excited. We were almost there!
