Chapter Forty Six
The next day, the human didn't bring the chick back.
"Where did my brother go, Mommy?" Polly asked.
"The humans took them away."
Spring and Sky, who were also fledged, joined the conversation.
"Will they take me away, too?" Sky asked, frightened.
"No, they only take the bad chicks who don't eat their veggies."
The fledglings just talked among themselves after I said that, so I went in the box to check on the fourth and sixth chicks.
The fourth was a dark blue, a mutation known as "cobalt." He was a normal cobalt, that I decided to name Rain.
"Want food!" He tweeted at me.
I fed him and his sister, who, like the fifth, also seemed to be mostly white.
When I went back out of the box, Spring approached me.
"Can you give me some veggies, Mommy?"
I laughed, and said, "The humans will give them to you soon enough."
Having checked on the fledglings, I went back into the box to brood the chicks.
Chick number six turned out to be an albino. Wow! I didn't know that either Clouds or I had any ino in us.
It was a very nice surprise.
Looking into her red eyes, I named her Bubbles, because she always seemed to be hopping around.
Soon, all the chicks were fledged, and the human took away the box.
"Ok, everyone, come here!" I called one day.
All the fledglings gathered around me.
"It's time for talking lessons."
"Yay!" Rain jumped around on his perch.
"You're going to want a way to communicate with humans. They seem to respond very well with their own language, and that is why I'm teaching some of it to you."
I looked around. All eyes were on me, waiting for me to reveal the "secret" language.
I began with "Hello."
All the young birds picked that up in a few minutes.
"Good!" I was proud. My chicks picked words up faster than any I've ever known.
"Ok, now, say 'talk'"
Once they learnt that, I decided that was enough for one day.
Looking at my chicks playing, I still can't believe that I'm a parent.
