Chapter Fifty Five

"Are you my mommy?" Aqua's oldest chick asked me when she had gotten a few days older.
"No, I'm afraid I'm not," I chirped, unsure of what I should say.
"Then who is?"
"Aqua," I chirped carefully.
"Who's that?"
"Your mom!" I laughed.
"But..."
"All right, I know what you're saying. Wait here.
I flew off. Aqua's chick looked at me with bewilderment.
I returned with Spirit, Sunny, and Grass.
"I couldn't find your mommy, but I found your sister and your two brothers."
"Where's mommy?" The chick asked them.
"Um, we don't know." Sunny replied. He glanced at me. I winked at him.
"But I want my mommy!" The chick cried.
"I'm sorry," I chirped, "We don't know where she is."
But I knew exactly where she was. In heaven. I looked at the crinkled blue flower on the ground beneath the box.
"Spirit, Sunny, Grass, could you name your new sisters and brothers?" I asked them, "I want someone from Aqua's family to do it."
"Sure," Spirit replied, and the three of them discussed the matter.
A rebellious budgie came up to me, and said, "Why can't we go as a flock already?" In an angry way.
"We can't until the chicks fledge.
"I don't care about the chicks! I just want to go!!"
"If we're going to be a flock, you're going to have to care about chicks. We'll have to be one." I replied matter of factly.
He angrily flew away.
Some budgies are so unreasonable.
"We came up with the names!" Grass chirped, flying over.
"Yeah, That one's Stream," Sunny motioned to a light blue and white chick.
"And that one is Blue." Spirit chirped, looking at the second chick.
"They're just as blue as Aqua was," I muttered to myself.
Aqua had three chicks in this clutch.
And there was something I didn't want to admit, not even to myself.
The last chick died. I killed him.
