~*~The Life Story of Apple the Budgie~*~

Chapter Sixty Six

I've stayed with the girl for a few days now, and the need to go back to the aviary is becoming hazy and unimportant seeming.
I was sitting on the windowsill, enjoying the sun.
I looked out the window.
Something stirred inside me. The wild is where I should be.
Where I have to be.
There is no excitement with life indoors. There is nothing new.
Even if I might die sooner, I have to live out.
I chirped for the girl.
When she came, I thought for a moment.
"What is it, Apple? Why were you chirping?" She asked me.
I took a moment to form the word on my tongue, then said, "Out."
"You want to go out?"
I looked at her.
"Will I ever see you again?" She asked me.
I didn't know.
I gazed outside to show her how much I liked being out there.
"Ok then. If that's really what you want."
I was so excited.
As she was opening the window, I flapped my wings in place enthusiastically.
The window was open.
My feathers fluttered in the breeze as I prepared to fly.
I sprung up onto the wind as it lifted me up.
For the first time, I truly felt free.
Free as a bird, under the wide open sky.
I swooped and dove, I flew up high, then skimmed the grass.
It's a great feeling to be free.
