I continued to sing rather gaily until we were almost at my aviary.
The hawk landed on a branch. Surprised, I stopped singing.
"I gave up on eating you," She said slyly.
I stared at her, surprised.
"So I'll just rip you up and leave you to die!"
I squirmed in terror. I was almost there!
Opening my beak, I tried to protest, but her grip on my throat held me.
Why did I ever think of annoying the hawk into letting me go? How could I be so stupid?
And now I would pay.
With her stiff grip holding my throat, the hawk took her beak and ripped open my belly.
I shrieked with pain, and squirmed with all the strength I could, trying to break free.
The hawk was apparently enjoying this, so she grabbed my wing with her beak and began to shred it. Help!, I thought, Anyone! I've been stupid, and now...
The hawk held my throat even tighter.
It was becoming harder and harder to breathe.
I shrieked in terror.
Out of the corner of my eye, I saw the aviary. Most of it was hidden in the trees.
I had to get there!
"No!" I screamed.
The hawk wasn't satisfied yet.
Holding me, as tight as ever, she screeched something I couldn't catch.
Then everything went black.
