The Lock, the cold... the horror!

Get a second on to hide and don't let DH know about it! That way you will still have a key.

Ha, that's no fun is it. Glad you got it worked out

One ground-floor apt I lived in, I used to keep a coathanger hidden in the weeds under the most easily jimmied window. Used it several times, too.

I now keep a spare key hidden a couple places around the property. However I discovered in 2007 that this does not help if your 3 yr old son has just locked the storm door 'for fun' when you popped out onto the deck for a moment

Thus, fully pregnant with #2 and in fact on my due date and feeling like I was in the early stages of labor (!), there I was perched atop a wibbly stepladder trying to climb in the bathroom window. Predictably I got stuck, headfirst, like a whale being shoved in the window. Had to cajole #1 into dragging a chair into the bathroom so I could extricate myself without actually falling headfirst onto the toilet.

I am positive that this is why #2 was born two days later rather than on his due date

The storm door latch has since been disabled. Hmph.

We have one of these
combination_key_lock_boxes.jpg
(not exactly the same, but close) on the outside of our house. It takes a combination to get the key out. I picked ours up at Lowe's.

Vfem, where in Clayton does your DH work? Clayton is where I grew up... parents still live there.

The best place I've found is just inside the doghouse. I put a small hook just inside the door and to the side and put the key there. My dog was on a big heavy chain at that time and I'm sure no one would look there.

That lock looks like a great idea, but I think I'm going to hide it in the chicken house. There are some great rafters in there the silkies can't even get on. I'm going to screw a metal plate on the back of one and slide that magnetic box with key back up there.... (shhhhh, hubby ain't going to know!)

Hubby works near the historic district off of Main St. He's usually not there though, he's usually off working on site somewhere between here and wilmington, or here and virgina... or here and SC! I'm so glad they gave him a company vehicle. He was unemployed until December 13!!! Thank goodness this company is so busy they had to hire him, and looks like they are going to hire one other person now in the next 2 months!

Where are you at in NC now if you left Clayton?

Glad you got back in so quickly!
Disturbing that it was so easy to get in though? At least you can trust your neighbor...I live in a rural area, and rarely lock everything, but my dog/security system seems to be working out okay so far!
Good idea to put the key in a safe place in the chicken coop! Anywhere else, and a person may forget where they left it??
take care,
Tina

Funny thing about 'rural' you drive out in the country... there is horse pasture.... house... horse pasture... house... fields... house... then one small neighborhood we live in where there is only 30 houses and everyone has 1-2.5 acres each... then a small trailor park of like 25 trailors.... then fields... horse pasture... farm....ect

We're out there... they just crammed a couple random neighborhoods in on old farm / wooded land. Sadly, they are selling the field land and some of the horse pasture land to developers now

Our values will go up... but I will find another place further out when they do!
