Great input from KenK as usual !!

Might I suggest if you have a Costco or Sam's Club membership buying a BAG of yeast - a one pound bag costs about $6.00. I have a jar from yeast I bought in the store that was like $8.00 - I just pour some from the bag into the jar and put the remainder of the bag in a zippered freezer bag and store on the door of my freezer. It lasts AGES... We also mix some sugar and 2-3 Tbls yeast in warm water and flush that down the toilet to keep our septic tank happy - beats buying that RidX stuff...

Love me some fresh bread.... Off to break that last baguette outta the freezer !!

I wish I had a membership but our income doesn't allow for such things. I do by jars of yeast here, and they are like $2.50, so not so bad. My account is in the negatives this week... so groceries are going to have to wait until Friday at the earliest. **fingers crossed my check goes through**

Vfem,

As for the financial thing we've all been there, I can personally attest that we're a little tight this week actually.
I don't know where you live but in California, the Bay Area specifically there is a chain of stores called Smart Final. It is non-membership, meaning you can walk in off the street and buy with no membership. It's like a restaurant supply type place with lots of food items in large quantities. I loved Smart Final because when I wanted to bake I could get manufacturers cream - which has a much higher fat content than even the best store brand heavy whipping cream. So if you want to make a cake with a whipped cream filling that will REALLY (and when BigMike says REALLY he means it) stand up to many days of refrigeration this is "the kind" (showing my Cali roots). My bet is they'd have RedStar or Fleischmann's Yeast in bulk. Look around on eBay too.

And I find that over the course of a year a membership at Sam's or Costco pays in spades. Of course we have lots of pets (cats, parakeets, chickens), I cook a lot from scratch and bake. In a year the money we save on wine from Sam's Club pays for the membership fee. And Costco has some amazing deals one everyday stuff like Frontline flea medicine. And a non-cooking secret... I think Costco is also carrying this stuff. Laundry soap, a tree hugging friendly brand call Ecos - a HUGE bottle of ECOS laundry liquid soap costs about $11.00 - we have an HE (high efficiency) machine and this soap you use the most pathetically small amount and a bottle lasts forever. ECOS Lavender...

We do a LOT of laundry - we use towels on the perches and carriers in our chicken coop - easy clean up, and wash on the sanitize cycle. This ECOS is the bomb...
Maybe a friend of yours can take you to the warehouse store, I used to do that with my friends all the time. The cashiers usually look the other way, or you give your friend the cash and they just ring the whole thing up and pay for it themselves (with your cash helping).

If you can't find a pound bag of yeast anywhere else, at least figure what it costs to order from King Arthur, with the shipping, to compare to your grocery store. As Mike said, it will keep a very long time in the freezer, takes me about a year to use a pound up. I think a pound of yeast is equal to about 190 teaspoons.

Wow... I may have to check it out!

You know, the way things are going... we're stripping the pantry done when I'm usually stocking up this time of year. Maybe we need to start a thread of recipes to help people out using odd things they have left they need to use to feed the family because we're lacking what we would actually like. Not to mention, gotta make the bottom of the barrel food taste good too!

Saving that listing for when I get paid. Thanks!

I did get a bunch of change together today and had enough to buy a couple envelopes of yeast and some grated cheese. I should be able to make pizza for dinner tonight, so the DD and DH will be thrilled!

Someone in another thread got me going on making baguette dough - then I realized later "hey what's for dinner, just bread ??". Nope I cooked up some Tomato & Rice Soup, have it simmering now while the baguette dough is on it's final rise before rolling.

I just made these yesterday to go with our pasta and sauce dinner. (Looks like pasta for dinner the next couple of weeks! :p )
