The Middle Tennessee Thread

I spent a few hours last night searching for roll out nesting box plans. Does anyone here use them? Know a source for a good plan? I have a friend that will build them for me if I can decide exactly what I want.

My coop is an 8'x10' converted shed. I have 16 hens now, all laying. Come spring, the plan is to divide the coop and put it on the frame of an old tobacco wagon I inherited.

Then, I plan to get 20 or so chicks. I haven't decided if I want just one breed or a few different ones. I definitely want a hardy breed of good layers as I sell the eggs.

I'm also going to get a few roosters. These will be kept in a chicken tractor type hoop house. I want to put them in with my current flock next winter in the hopes that they will provide me with a new group of layers.

I'd like to have 3 flocks at a time. Two laying. Then when they get too old to lay they will become freezer hens.

Any suggestions?

I got my new Barred Rock roo today.... YIPPY!

I traded him a Blue Barred Pullet and a pullet with cross beak.

His buddy bought 3 birds a BCM and 2 CCL I had that I could not get eggs to hatch from. One laid soft shell eggs and the other laid GIANT eggs right off. They would develop and stop 95% of the time so I can't breed her.

BUT my CCL pullets are starting to lay.... I got a nice Blue egg today.... I have been getting a white one... not sure who is laying that but she is going to hit the road..... could I use her to help the MFL???? I don't know what she genetically though, but she kinda looks like a Brown Leghorn.... hum.....

Hey…I just partly heard the story the other day but it seems like the last few hold out districts in Nashville are now allowed to have "backyard chickens"….guess we'll be getting even more new additions to this forum.

Need to put a flyer up on the bulletin board at the CoOp so that people can find us right off when they go shopping for their chicken supplies.
