The Middle Tennessee Thread

Just wanted to say to JtownCicken & Cacooley that I'm in Memphis too! We used to have a small West Tennessee thread but it died. I have Barnevelders (from Bev/Chickensmart) and Speckled Sussex.
Also saw TNbearchick from east tennessee post a day or so ago...are they raising Bielefelders? I've seen them on the Bielefelder thread & am really interested in the breed!!

Hey there memphis! I am kind of giddy about starting a flock. I just joined a Facebook group of Midtown Chicken enthusiasts today. I'd really like to see how someone else is raising backyard chickens here in Memphis. I see that the city ordinance allows them. I hope my neighbors are ok with it. I am trying to stick with quiet breeds that lay well. I think I've settled on Delaware and RIR to begin (based soley upon what ive read).

I've had 1 hatchery Delaware (she went missing today, I'm really hoping she is on a clutch of eggs somewhere safe).
She is going on 3 yrs old. She lays well, good med-large as pullet, large as hen, light brown eggs. She has gotten along very very well with an ever changing assortment of other birds of various breeds & ages who have ended up spending time in the random layer flock w/ her. To include 5 or 6 different Roos, and something like 30ish different pullets &/or hens. I've never seen her fight with any of them but she roosts w/ the top 3 girls on the highest perch. She has always been very quiet and friendly but not pushy. I'll be very happy if she shows up in 3 wks w/ an unplanned clutch of mutt chicks, and very sad if she was lost today as she had been a good dependable part of the layer flock. If other hatchery Del are like this one then you would do well with them even in an urban chicken situation.

I have 7 RIR and they are LOUD!!! Idk if I'd go with them if I was trying to be quite. I have one that when she wants out of her run or sees "danger" she will honk like a goose (shes louder thn my Rooster). All the other cluck, coo, and cackle all day long (sometimes in their sleep).
