I'm just throwing in a random question. What types of chickens should I AVOID in TN? I live in Murfreesboro and understand it can be chilly to y'all (I'm from Iowa, so teens are comfortable in winter for me) but I don't want my chickens to be miserable and getting frostbite etc. and I don't want them overheating in the summer either.

I don't know of any that are perfect. My English Orpingtons need a good dunking in cool water in extreme heat but are good in winter, my Australorps are good in summer but they need petroleum jelly or udder balm on their combs in single digit temps in winter. My Aussie lost comb tips this past winter

I have never had a mean wyandotte. Mine are not hatchery that may be what is different.

The weather we had this winter was HARD. I have about 4 roosters that lost points or had wattle issues. They are fine now. I also didn't lose any birds when we got to 113 either. Because we have relatively mild conditions most of the year any breed you want would probably do fine. Any bird with straight combs could have issues in the winter..... any really heavy breeds could have issues in the summer but for the most part they do just fine.

I have yet to lose any to cold, even last winter. I have lost the occasional older hen to heat. The high temps and ridiculously high humidities that we sometimes get in August are tough. When it is cold they just huddle together and are fine. They get so miserable in the heat though.
I have had an assortment of breeds and all seem to handle things equally well. Just pick the ones you love the best.
