The Middle Tennessee Thread

Disappointment....only a Double in this huge egg shell. What is worse...it was a fertile egg and I could have incubated it! Shucks!
The odds of it developing or hatching are very very slim. It has been done but usually it will not work with a double yolker.

Well its good to know I did not waste a good breakfast meal and waste a double yoke that had less than a 50% chance of hatching. MSMOWER had the same luck on 12/13/2014 as I did (see their thread) and they reported Must Be Something In Our Tennessee Water.

I believe its that Red Neck Rooster! Mr. Humpy

My ROO, Mr. Humpy must have flown to your place for some R&R.

Wish I knew for certain what hen did that deed? Checked the girls and the all look alike, no wear and tear.

I know it wasn't Margarete as she is brooding. Happy Holidays

I've got an Australorp cockerel available. He's a beautiful specimen, one year old in March 2015, but he's leaking a small spot of red. He's also forgotten me....with my new job, I leave out at sun up, my husband is giving the chickens fresh water. I replenish feed and check them when I get home around 5. Right now, that's right at dark. The rooster has begun to treat me as a threat and I don't have time to re-establish myself as boss. I really don't. He's usually good as gold for a few weeks and has never actually attacked, until today. He waited until I wasn't looking.

I don't like to give roosters away, hoping to avoid them becoming bait for cockfight training. I'd make an exception for someone from backyard chickens. If you think you can reform him and save him from freezer camp, let me know.

Anyone need a good Roo? I have a barred rock and a Cochin mix Roo that I'm looking to get rid of. Both are very friendly and a great protectors too.

Does anyone know of anyone in Middle Tennessee that regularly and reliably accepts unwanted roosters for meat? Too many roosters in the world, I'm going to have 3 to make decisions about this Spring.
I've always heard people say they know 'some Amish man' or the like that would accept a meat bird most any time. I'd just love to know some guy like that....lol.

But I'll try to re-home them like everyone else first.

White rock mix, about 10 weeks(starting to worry about the one on the right)

Supposedly black copper maran, but was also suppose to be a pullet. 5-6 weeks. He'll climb right up your arm.

BlueGrey EE, alot of comb, may still be a pullett, but I doubt it. A real hoss at 5-6 weeks.

I can keep one, so I'd certainly give away any to a home and take whoever is left. Otherwise they'll need to be eaten. Which I'm working up the courage for if I can't find a sure humane end for them. Don't really want to learn the art of butchery for 2 birds.
With the new chicken laws in Nashville, someone should start a full time charity that accepts roo's, butcher's them and gives away the meat ;)

Does the copper marans have feathered feet? I couldn't tell from the pic. Is he showing any coppering on him yet? I have one copper maran Roo but he is blind in one eye and I think I should have 2 with how many hens I have...
