Okla-I don't think there is really anyone breeding for quality red..seems to be more of a hatchery color only and hatchery cohcin's lack fluff

but they are still so sweet.49 lost wow that would make me want to hang the closed sign up...we lost our only large cochin in the first heat spell but since then lots of tarps and watering the pens down has worked well.My cochin's all have fans on their pens as well to at least stir the hot air some.
DM-by fall the pullets will be really easy to spot so I'll have some of them then available..can't keep them all

Okay, I'm clearing out pens.

I have for sale:
(2) black Easter egger pullets
(3) barred EE cockerels
(1) mutt cockerel that looks like a barred rock (he's 3/4 barred rock and 1/4 ameraucana)
(5) black ameraucana cockerels

(1) golden lakenvelder chick (I think a girl. They are about 5 weeks old.)
(1) silver lakenvelder (I think a boy.)
(2) blue mottled cochins (both are showing red on their combs. Both male? Dunno. I don't know enough about cochins to tell you. They are pretty stinkin' cute though.)

PM me if anyone is interested. Trying to empty out the pens so I can start up another hatch.

Morning everyone! Whew, there's lots of chicken/egg trading going on here. Now I can't keep track of who has what, LOL! Thanks to those who are posting pics; it's always nice to window shop.

OklaDD, I am so sorry to hear about your OK friend whose cochins died from the heat. So much of the country has suffered terribly this summer with the weather.

Looks like we are going to get a dose of it ourselves today - - 100 is the prediction, but we have been running 2-3 degrees above what the airport measures. I have been hosing my silkies down in the afternoons, and I put 2-liter frozen bottles in the coops for anyone who will actually go inside at night. Filled the ice trays out in the pens 4 times yesterday. . . guess the big hens will be making more chicken foot tea this afternoon. They like to stir their gnarly old feet in the ice water . . . now that I think about it, that's probably a good idea for ME, too. Maybe I'll join them!

Stay cool, everyone!

Only ya'll can fully appreciate this:

Must drive 100 or so miles every morning and afternoon to get myself and DH to work. Worked about 1 1/2 hrs and a co-worker (we work in a very large downtown Nashville bldg) stopped at my cube to ask if I had a stowaway. Told him I had no idea what he is talking about. Appears there is a chicken in the flower beds.

With a sense of sinister foreboding....went out the front door....looked around....made my way to the front of the finger pointing laughing crowd....she is mine. She is one of our more hand petted girls. She ran up to me and clucked.

She is sitting on my desk as I type enjoying some tomato from the little deli on the first floor. She appears to have ridden in the engine area as there is nothing but the scent of burnt feathers about her.

I am now being banished from the bldg by my supervisor's supervisor. Can't put in the truck--too dang hot. They suggested that by the way. Morons. Actually got stopped in the elevator because one lady didn't know hens had combs and wanted to touch it. Where do these people come from?

So off to drive another 100 miles to take Henny Penny home. Well I wanted to spend the day in the hammock. Did I mention I drive 85?

So red in the face...everyone in the office has pictures of the event.
