Incubator is up and running! I will check it out for two days and see what is going on with the temps. The egg turner seems to be working too

but I have not tested it with the timer or with any weight on the trays, but it should be fine. Now just needs some eggs....

Well I traded my last speckled sussex hen for 6 babies today. Got my way after all. They are supposed to be all hens, guess we'll see. I think I got 2 barred rock, an americauna, a rir, and 2 white leghorns. That's my initial guess anyway. I'm happy with them. I finally caught all four of the first EE chicks I hatched back in june tonight. Oddly enough I got four hens outta that! What's the real kicker on that deal is I would have swore I only had two left! Anyway, 3 are barred and one is laced. All pretty and fat little girls. My lame hen is still lame, but she's back in her tree tonight and seems happy just getting around on one foot. I guess I'm gonna just let her be for a bit longer and see how she does.

My friend has a lame Rir hen, hellen. She has.one foot.. racoon ate her toes on one foot, she is miing alot of feathers and her face is scared. She is an amazing layer and gets around like she is fine, she roosts and everything. I got 5 of her babies in the incubator right now.

It is amazing what they can overcome! I have a bantam Cochin hen that has a leg that is just useless but she gets around fine and has a great life. I found a chick had to be just a couple of days old in my bantam pen the other day bloody and just sitting waiting to die I grabbed it up took it in and cleaned it up it had been pecked so bad I could see its skull on to of its head and around one ear

did not think it was going to make it but I gave it a chance. After a couple of days she(I hope) is just as spunky and loud and hungry as any chick so never give up I say!

I don't give up until they do.We just had a chick get every toe chewed off and a part of the pad-bad bunny, dumb chick

..a round of antibiotics to be safe and the foot has healed over and she's now outside running around on her stump just fine
Raven's 1 legged hen reminds me of my crippled BSL everyone that has been out here has seen her..she can't really stand she leans and scoots around using a wing...and she gets around. She has outlived the one's that couldn't handle the winter and now the one's that couldn't handle the heat I'm not about to change that.

Jenski-yes, and now I have no excuse time to get cleaning outside even more

The only bad thing is we booked an outside pool at the Country Club for the kick off of Girl Scouts for Sat night instead of the inside pool at the fitness center. It's going to be a bit cool after dark swimming.

Just when you think you have Mother Nature figured out some...

Sad day yesterday - Huge red-tail hawk flew into the coop through a small opening in the netting & killed/ate my daughter's favorite chicken "Dude" she was a very sweet & docile white crested black polish.

Still can't belive the hawk had the guts to come into the enclosure after a full grown chicken. My daughter (7yrs old) is still to pieces over it - at least she didn't see it. Felt so bad for her I ordered a few polish from MPC - I haven't told her yet - they will/should arrive next week just in time for her b-day.

Raven1: thank you

CarolJ: I hope so too - I know they won't replace Dude but I know how cheerful new chicks are & how exited my daughter gets over them since we raise them for several weeks inside.
