The Middle Tennessee Thread

I have heard Mereck's several times over the last month and you guys are freaking me out. I will talk to Dr. Walker about vaccinations today, this is too much stress with as much as I show and hatch.

Speaking of hatching..................
I go into lock down today then one more hatch and I AM DONE! I had a friend call and ask me to set eggs for her but I was able to say no. Cause I knew if I set her eggs I would be tempted to run a few of my own and I swear I am getting chicks out of the house soon. I will have to have heat lamps running outside but that is not such a big deal.

Tracy I do hope you are able to swing by today you can help fluff some bottoms. haha I am down to washing the whites and fluffing everyone else back up. All beaks and toes are trimmed and clean. I have called in the minions to help with the rest, just need to do some fluffing and then crate everyone up and head to Newport. I hope to do well with the blues and blacks (Watch out Jack we are going for blood and a repeat of spring.) but my main focus is Champion AOV with the Showgirls. I got my plaque from Indy today and was tempted to sleep with it. haha. It will go nice with the ribbons.

I hope you all have a wonderful day it is supposed to be sunny with a high of 57 if I am not mistaken.

Anne you heading out to Newport? You know Jack is going for his master in Buff's right? He should be bringing out his best in the buff and I know he said he is bringing out a white he usually does not show. He is going for show champion with her over a OEGB. This show should have some fantastic birds so we will see. Thanks for all the good lucks everyone.

Have a great weekend everyone it is gonna be a nice one.

I can't go this weekend.

I have family stuff to do. Take lots of pictures though. I'd love to see his buffs.

Good luck to you!!!

Is it true that chickens having exposure to the turkey version of Marek's offers protection against the chicken variety? I've heard this and that some people keep turkeys with their chickens for this reason. Just wondering if it's another of those stories or if there is actual truth to it? We get a lot of wild turkeys here (understatement of the year) and I'm kinda hoping they are good for even more than entertainment and tick control.

Donna-hopefully she just got hurt by another one of the chickens..however,they don't need to be directly exposed to get Merecks...as long as you walk on dirt touch anything that has been on the dirt you take it to the young one's..they can get it never stepping on the ground. It only really gets young birds as they get an immunity to it as they age
The Merecks vaccine is out there..it's expensive so one of those things where you have to decide which is better...possibly loosing a few to it or trying to vaccinate them for it.My personal thought is most will never get it and those that do have a weakened immunity system or they wouldn't have picked it up..I don't want that bird in my flock anyway.

I have a bunch of stuff this weekend so I'm staying close to home.I can't show anything right now anyways unless they have a bald chicken category

Holly not sure about a bald chicken contest but I do know in Clanton they did have a rally on what number a chicken would poop on. You know I had to spend that dollar on 5. I didn't win.

Holly where do I grab that from? They looked at me like I was from another plant at the Co-op and TSC said we just really sell feed??????

BTW When I got to the farm they had killed another bird

The plucked one I saved is doing ok it seems. Hubby is sick so I got about 10 birds (9 roos) out of that pen so maybe things will calm down. They of course started fighting in the new pen

at least if they are the cause I will only lose roos

My plan is to get the two Lav Splits out in their own pen just in case.

Oh the D'Uccle was up and around more today

so she is on the mend.

Sorry...that sucks..Both our TSC and Co-op sell it.
The correct name is Anti pick/pick no more and it's made by Rooster Booster. The stuff is great for more than chickens...I've grabbed it for horse wounds and the dog.Nothing wants to mess with it and it heals. It beats BluKote all over..when your done you won't be blue for a week...it won't color your clothes funny either.

I have a pullet on one leg..same pen as a little cochin roo hobbling around..He was rushed off the ramp by my big horse of a Wyandotte "baby" roo about a week ago and fell hard the pullet looks like she has a broken toe which I have no idea how she could do that but the only thing I know if it can be done a chicken will find a way to do it.
Sold 5 layers 8 pullets and 3 roosters tonight

I only have a few more pullets left before I will be where I want to be

No more baby buns today but 2 are working on it tonight...think it will be the last of them from this bunch.

I'm going to get down to just a trio or quad of most of the big breeds.I don't want to sell hatching eggs and with my Spring schedule coming I won't have time to hatch hundreds so I don't need that many birds to feed.
