The Middle Tennessee Thread

Hello all, hope you are well and enjoyed your holidays. I was "sand bagging" for a while, but since November I've barely gotten to the computer here. I sit in front of one all day at work so I have a hard time spending the night there too.
I got home today and lo and behold I had my first egg from the original four chickens I hatched when I made my bator, and my golden seabright that will never go get in the house put himself to bed with the others. I was so happy. My egg was cute. Little bitty and greener than the one she hatched from. Out of those four I have 3 left and 2 are hens. They're my only hens I have left. They both turned out very nice looking though. One is totally barred and wild as the wind. The other one is gray with white lacing and more friendly. They hang out with the goats all day. It's funny how they seem to be friends, and the goats just let the chickens ride around on their backs.
I think I'm gonna get this incubator going again and get a jump on spring. DMRippy had some nice looking FBCM chicks on CL, but I think I missed the bus. I want to get some more anconas or speckled sussex I think. I really love the speckled sussex breed, but can't find anyone around who has them. The first lady wants some silkies, but I'm not paying that much for eggs that may or may not hatch. My oldest son wants some turkeys. I'm also trying to find some of them local if anyone know of any lines of supply.
Well I'm looking forward to things slowing down at work so I can catch up on stuff here.
I'll see ya'll around.

I still have a blue copper marans roo... want him?

He hatched I think October 23rd.

you know how they say you should have one rooster for 10 hens.... I have the opposite!

Me too! That will have to change at the end of this month and after this hatch (9 doz eggs over the next 30 days or so) Then I will get maybe 2 doz when I go to Newnan for sure and who knows what I will find while there right?

2.50-13 bucks per bird. Depending on age. And I know where it is but I was wondering people veiws on the place.

I'm just catching up a few pages and saw your question. My folks bought their first flock from Poultry Hollow. The chicks were purchased at "4-6 weeks of age" (looked like 3-4 to me). Before the chicks had left the brooder box in their livingroom, most had displayed symptoms of a respiratory illness that passed without any losses. The Brahmas are nice to look at but crazy skittish even with hand feeding. The barred Rocks are all over the place in appearance (3 out of 4 are not even close to standard and the one that is has a severe wry tail). Poultry Hollow also slipped in a mutt cockerel as one of their two light Brahma pullets. It was obvious -- no leg feathering at all and a red comb at 4 weeks -- so not likely a legitimate mistake. After I pointed out the problem, they called and asked about it but were brushed off. He said that "sometimes Brahmas don't have leg feathers" and it doesn't matter if you're not showing them. The older he got, the more obvious it was that he wasn't even half Brahma. He ended up in the stewpot after attacking my mom but that's another story.

I bought my first flock from Doug Berny (The Poultry House) near Franklin. They are similar to Poultry Hollow in variety but practice biosecurity (no visits to the farm allowed). Doug's great about answering questions and I feel positive about my experience and the quality of the birds I received. No illnesses or problems other than two bent toes on my EE cockerel (he was the only sexing mistake out of 14 birds so the accuracy is good). Mine aren't show quality but they at least represent their breed (aside from the "Ameraucanas" obviously being EEs). He's just run an ad on Craigslist recently. Search "pullet" and look for Franklin in the location and you should find him or if you want it, let me know and I can PM you his email. He takes pre-orders but also sells the extras to walk-ups on Saturdays during the spring months at Bonnie's Barnyard. Oh, and his birds don't get put in public bins -- they sell from a trailer parked next to Bonnie's and orders are pulled and boxed for transit just before being handed to their new owners. You don't pay until you take them home.

Ok, So, I had 4 originally hatch out of Hot2pots eggs,I didnt see any others moving or pipped, so I wanted to break some open to see what happend. I broke 4, the first was a quitter, 2nd one was undeveloped, 3rd was fully developed but did not hatch, it died... the fourth WAS ALIVE! So I threw it back in the hatcher and waited, and waited, it was moving but couldnt see the beak, and had not punctured the membrane yet...I didnt want it to suffocate so I ripped a small hole in it...I saw a chick bottom.....What Happend was the chicks head formed at the pointy end instead of the normal way, so it could not move properly, so I removed shell around head and it busted out in about an hour...It seems ok, its wobbling around now, drying off...
The other four are sleeping away in their brooder...

And we got SNOWW! Yay, No school for me.

I contacted someone who raises Greenfire Farms stock birds...He has Buff sussex., birchen marans, and swedish flower hens.
He has two trios of buff sussex, 3 months old for sale, my friend has a trio that she got from him, and boy, not only gorgous, but BIG, FLUFFY, And so friendly, they certinately have a personality.
I came home yesterday evening, and all of my featherd friends were huddled in their coops.
Except my leghorn, who was eating the snow.....

My lil crower chick is huge, and will not stay in brooder...GRR.

Hey country get outta bed! lol. Just because its a snow day doesn't mean you get to sleep all day!lol Yeah! Tomorrow is the day! Iam hooking the trailer up tonight and will be at your place by six.Want to get there early so I can get in and get the pen off the trailer before they get busy since I am not good at backing it up! I turned the turner off and misted the eggs. Keeping fingers crossed. Mine have been laying good but I bet they stopp after this cold spell. They sure do good on the new feed. And eat less too. Once they got their fill they really slowed down. The mottleds are doing great. All are putting on weight. The roo wants to follow me around when they are out. I can catch them by hand and put them up they are so gentle. Wished the buffs would hurry up and get that way.

I just scored two male rats for free with 2 or three cages:) My friend Cstol is planning on going. Hope to buy her buff brahmas bantams off her. Sold my phoenix babies the other day for 6 a piece, Spent it on a nice brooder light and toe strap for when I move that metal shed over here. I cant wait! I am gettings things set as we speak!. Bators empty, so if you have any extras Id be glad to hatch em.
Cleaning frozen poop today.:p

It was not bad.... unless you were out fixing gutters so the chickens would not get flooded again.... it was cold and windy. The car door was frozen shut... it took two hands and a hard tug to get in.

You going to Newnan? If so I will see you there.
