The Middle Tennessee Thread

Jenski, I order bare root plants from Gurney's online. They were throwing a spend $25 get $25 free special so I got strawberries and blueberries. Yummy! They will take this year (if we don't have a freaky hot summer like last year!) and start producing next year for real. They come bundled together in a baggie. It never looks like 25 plants in a rubber band, but they are always there. I'm never convinced the bare root stuff will grow. They always look dead when they come, but somehow they magically survive (at least until I fall down on the weeding and watering).

Holly, I set 18 eggs last Thursday. I pulled four obviously clear ones last night. There are two more that are iffy. The others are veining away in there. I should have babies around March 10th. Whoohoo!! Maybe I can get eggs from you sometime after that.

CityGirlintheCountry - The chickens are settling in well. I ended up going back to get the cochin a buddy so now we're up to 6 chickens : 4 buff orpingtons and 2 bantam cochins (daisy and ben kenobi - kids helped to name them, can you tell?) In a few days dear husband will have the enclosed run done so they can explore! Pictures to follow soon.

25 roosters left tonight...I'm going to think I'm in the wrong place now with 75 chickens gone in just a few days..chicks grow so fast though they will be all feathered and eating me out of house and home once again real soon.
CityGirl I should have some eggs for you..do you want cute small and fuzzy or big not so cute but more useful?
My new black roo took his move real hard so we may have to skip Dalton..he's depressed so today he free ranged the chick house some.I tried to feed them some grapes they didn't know what to do with one but until they got here I don't think they have ever had a hug...now they are really enjoying the cuddles.

CityGirl, thanks for the strawberry info. I have a raised bed all ready for some . . .
Good luck on your opening Thurs night! You are certainly staying busy. I can't imagine you have even decompressed after your trip!

Holly, what kinda eggs you got over there??? Anything small and fuzzy and speckledy and cute?? My little Belgian hen might need a broody test run soon. I am curious to see how she does with eggs, but I am trying to wait until at least March to start setting hens . . . of course the birds never read the calendar I made for them.

Troyerchicks, we'll be looking forward to pictures from your new flock and coop! How exciting.

Whew! I think I just spent 45 minutes catching up on this forum. I hate missing all of everyones adventures.

Sounds like everyone is having a great time getting some new chicks.

Holly - how do you keep up with 100+ chickens? Did you post any pics of your new coop yet? I'd love to see some pics.

Jen - your eggs are so colorful and FUN ... are those for eating or hatching.

A neighbor gave me 5 fertile eggs to try my skills at incubating. I really wanted some of Holly's again because I know those are always really good fertile eggs and it's so easy to candle the blue eggs. The 5 I have are brown. Today is day 7 so I might candle on Saturday day 10 so I'm bound to see something in those dark eggs.

I have just been way to busy at work - worked 13 hours straight on Saturday night in Nashville and with the 3 hour drive that just ate away my entire weekend.

No baby bunnies yet, this Saturday it will be 4 weeks that I have had them and the day I attempted to breed them (or should I say the boy decided he wanted to get busy - I wasn't planning on mating so soon). Not sure if that mating took or not. But, my Doe is meaner then a rattlesnake right now. She scratched and bite me last evening while I put my hand in her cage to give her more pellet feed. I have the two Angoras cages in a huge indoor workshop and cleaned it all up Saturday so now I can open their cages and they have tons or room to play ... they are loving it.

I haven't posted the App for sale on Craigslist yet ... soon. I just need some 'free time' - yikes.

Looks like I'm going for a quicky visit to Tampa Bay FLA on March 4th to see my family and new grandbaby - he hasn't arrived yet but the due date is Feb. 28th.

Sounds like everyone is going to the Dalton show - wow that sounds like a great time and great opportunity to see everyone in person again. I need to google search how far away that place is from me way out here in Pleasant Shade TN. I would LOVE to see everyones chicks and get tempted into buying some new breeds *smile*.

Have a beautiful day everyone!!!

Shelly-100 chickens is easy to manage 400 gets difficult

We sold 75 this week and I can hardly see the difference...maybe because all the ones hiding in my basement are now moving outside and filling the space. I haven't posted any recent pics of the "rust"ic chicken house..it's sitting on a foundation so technically no longer a coop. It's "finished" insulated and heated but we are putting in built in pens on all the walls for the chicks..right now they are in wire rabbit cages..looks awful and the sizes are wrong but it's working for now.We also need to put the last of the siding on and paint it so we can loose the "rust"
We are expecting lots of chicks this week and plan to keep nearly none.I really want to stay in the under 200 range ah heck 100 would be super duper fantastic for my feed bill and my time but not sure if I can get there or not.
I have put up all of the Black split lavender Orpington chicks I hatched from Bargain if anyone "needs" some..there are 5 that hatched Thanksgiving Day 2 roos 2 pullets and the last looks like it's going to be a pullet.$50 gets them all and I get more space!! I have lavs coming from both Hinkjc and Shaffer eggs so that should do...for now!
