Troyerchicks, congratulations! You definitely need at least two of any breed. They always need a buddy, especially if you have one bantam. Holly can probably set you up!

Aren't they sweet. . .

Can anyone tell me the procedures on getting NPIP certified in Tn? I don't plan on selling anything right now but maybe by fall.....? I know that once you are certified you can only buy from NPIP certified right? Any info would be great...by the way....bidding on eggs.......I am sucked in

The fee is 25 and you just have to set up the apt and they will come out and test your flock. Make sure you have blood stop it was more blood than I was comfortable with especially if you have white birds. But it is just a prick under the wing and a mouth swab. You should get your card in a couple weeks. The testing last for 1 year.

Thank-you Jen!! Troyerchicks will be adding another to her coop tomorrow..so I will be out of bantam pullets but if anyone needs a roo....oh I meant for a few weeks. We hatched several bantam cochins this week even some Mille Fleur but other than cute beyond words no idea of what they are
I would post some pics soon but Jen will have one of those explosions if she sees how cute they are

I hope to go to Dalton with the Cochin's but they are still not overly happy with the move..going to wait and make a last minute decision..won't be taking anything to sell though-I don't have anything much left to sell with over 50 leaving this past week...feed store isn't going to like me much this week

Morning all!

Well, I was sure that last week would be the beginning of the spring egg explosion in our coops: warm weather, moon waxing full, daylight inched over 11 hours, and . . . nothing. Well, not nothing - - a couple of eggs a day (on a good day), but no measurable changes at all.

Today, however, is a different story - - we had four eggs before the girls even came out for breakfast, and it looks like more are in the works. Even my youngest hens (bantam cochins!) are getting into the swing of things. . . and old Dame Edna the Black Australorp has even made her first deposit of the year. Not bad for a 5+ year old hen!

Spring's coming!
[Ed. to add - - Ameraucana eggs (large blue/green), Black Australorp egg (big brown), bantam Ameraucana eggs (small blue), bantam cochin eggs (small cream), silkie eggs (medium rose beige)]

believer01, I'm sending lots of healing thoughts your way. Our birds are never as healthy and happy as when they have their "chicken parent" watching over things! Hope you are dancing around soon!

1newegg, good luck with your NPIP. HBuehler is also certified, and she may have some useful info too.

Holly, I'm sure your birds will settle in soon. They hate change, don't they? A nice bunch of grapes might help them not think about it too much.

I had hoped to breed BBS bantam cochins, but I think I am looking for a little different "type" than most of what I have. I want some that look like my Penny, and she has a very unique, rounded face and heavier eyelids. . . almost like she has some bantam Cornish. I just love her overall look, so anyhoo . . . I may let all five of my other blue/black bantam cochins go - - the two roos and three young hens. One roo and hen are PQ (the sweetest ones, of course), the remaining three are better quality, but all are adorable and hand raised. I may try to rehome all five together. . .

Well, hope you all have a great day with your birds!

Love all the pretty eggs, Jen! Mine decided yesterday was a fine day to lay too. I got an exciting 6 eggs from the lot of them. I've been getting about 2 all winter, so this is a definite upswing. Love the idea of your BBS cochin project. BBS is fun because you never know what color you are going to hatch out. It's like Christmas!

Take it easy, Believer, with that ankle. You have too many things to do this spring to be laid up!

1newegg- the NPIP man is coming to see me in a couple of weeks. I'll give you the low down after he leaves. I'm told it is no big deal, but I can give you a play by play later.

YAY, Holly, on moving all those chickens. You are the WOMAN! Now you can hatch out more.

Do you want me to bring you cookie money to Dalton or are you coming to the April meetup? I am happy to do it either way.

Troyer- how are your new babies settling in today? When do we get pictures?

SimplySplendid- what all are you taking to Dalton? Will we get to see your lovely black silkies?

I am off to work. We open a show tomorrow night, so I have been in rehearsals all week. I am ready for spring break so I can play out in the yard some. I just ordered 100 strawberry plants to put in around the chicken coops. I'm hoping they will work as ground cover to keep the weeds down. I do so hate weed eating.

Enjoy the day, y'all!

Oh I'm hatching more the brooder boxes are full of new hatch and around 100 more will be filling them more this week..next week's hatch is a bit smaller....under 40
I have some beautiful Olive Egg tween roos that I will give away to anyone needing a pretty boy...and some BO and BR and BLRW and Silkie and Cochin and and and...
